If you’re a Frequent Flyer point fiend then you’ve probably made some interesting choices in order to bulk up your balance, but have you considered changing phone plans?
Optus and Qantas have partnered together with three exclusive SIM-only plans that can give you up to 20,000 bonus Frequent Flyer points.

5,000 bonus Frequent Flyer points
5 points per $1 spent on your monthly plan fees
$59 SIM-Only Plan

$79 SIM-Only Plan

4G Plus Network
5GB international roaming data per month
Unlimited roaming talk and text (Zone 1 destinations)
10,000 bonus Frequent Flyer points
10 points per $1 spent on your monthly plan fees
Ordinarily offers like this come with a lock-in term, and while these plans are contract-free you may need to stay up to 12 months in order to get the full points balance.
You’ll get paid out 5,000 points at the end of every three months that you stay connected, up until your points balance has been paid. For the $39 plan you can leave after three months and get your bonuses, six months for the $59 plan, and a year for the $79 plan.
On top of that you’ll earn extra points each month when you pay your phone bill. You’ll end up with 195 extra points per month on the $39 plan, 295 on the $59 plan and 790 on the $79 plan. Lets see how that would grow your points balance over the course of a year.
| Bonus FF points after 3 months | Bonus FF points after six months | Bonus FF points after 9 months | Bonus FF points after 12 months | |
| $39 SIM-Only | 5,585 | 6,170 | 6,755 | 7,340 |
| $59 SIM-Only | 5,885 | 11,770 | 12,655 | 13,540 |
| $79 SIM-Only | 7,370 | 14,740 | 22,110 | 29,480 |
If you pay with a credit card connected to your Frequent Flyers you can also get extra points on top of that.
These plans, especially the $39 deal are actually pretty good value for money when compared to other major providers. The closest offer you’ll get is from Vodafone which gets you 30GB for $45 per month. Optus itself doesn’t offer plans under $55 per month, so to nab 30GB for $39 is a solid offer, and you’ll pay an extra $4 on the $59 exclusive plan to get an additional 20GB of data when compared to Optus’s cheapest ordinary SIM plan. Telstra is also here, but the network’s $55 plan only comes with 40GB of data.
In saying that, there are other smaller providers that offer up more data-to-dollar value, like the ones below. But hey if you’re going to spend the money you might as well get the points while you’re at it.
All Qantas/Optus plans are open to new and existing customers.
