OPPO today revealed its release plans for Android 12, confirming which devices will see upgrades to Google's latest mobile operating system and when. There's good and bad news: OPPO is planning on upgrading 17 phones to Android 12 in Australia, but only one of them will get the upgrade this year.
Unsurprisingly, the lucky phone is the Find X3 Pro, which will get Android 12 in December. Here's the complete rundown:
- December 2021: Find X3 Pro
- First Half of 2022: Find X3 Neo, Find X3 Lite, Find X2 Pro, Find X2 Neo, Find X2 Lite, Reno4 5G, Reno4 Pro 5G, Reno4 Z 5G, Reno 10x Zoom, A94 5G, A74 5G
- Second Half of 2022: A74, A53, A53s, A16s, A54s
Of course, OPPO phones run the manufacturer's customised take on Android, known as ColorOS, so there can be some variance between Google's version of Android and what you get an OPPO device.
OPPO is implementing all of Google's new privacy and security features. These include a privacy dashboard that tracks how often your location, microphone, and camera have been accessed; a green dot in the upper-right hand corner of your screen if your camera and microphone are being used; and appropriate location functionality for apps that don't need to know exactly where you are.
Material You, Google's radical new design language where the operating system is far more customisable seems absent, however. Instead, OPPO says "ColorOS has inspired the customisable trend in Android 12, like the Wallpaper-based Theming system in Material You, which you would be able to find a similar self-developed feature in previous ColorOS editions". OPPO says the overall ColorOS 12 experience is however closer to stock Android.
In addition to the changes featured in the standard Android 12, OPPO says it's made improvements of its own. A few of these relate to performance. The manufacturer says the operating system will use 30% less RAM and 20% less battery. Animations have also been improved to make the operating system feel smoother.
