OPPO today announced local pricing and availability for the A53 and A53s, a pair of budget phones with high refresh rate displays. High refresh rate displays are one of the latest smartphone trends that first cropped around this time year in flagship smartphones. Cut forward to 2020, and we're now seeing them in devices as affordable as $299.
For those not familiar with high refresh rate displays, they essentially make all motion on a phone look smoother - whether you're scrolling through apps or playing a game. The OPPO A53 and OPPO A53s both have a 90Hz refresh rate display, whereas a conventional smartphone has a 60Hz refresh rate, for comparison. Some flagship devices - such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra - have a 120Hz display.
While the names are slightly different, the OPPO A53 and OPPO A53s are all but identical. They both feature a 6.5-inch 720p+ 90Hz screen, a Snapdragon 460 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery. Cameras are identical too, with the pair rocking a 12MP primary lens, 2MP macro lens, and 2MP depth lens. The key difference between the two is storage: the A53 has 64GB out of the box, while the A53s has 128GB. In both cases, storage is expandable.
Both phones are available from today, through JB Hi-Fi, Woolworths, Mobileciti, Bing Lee, and Amazon. The A53s is also available via Telstra.
The OPPO A53s will set you back $349 outright, while the A53 is a little cheaper at $299. Both are available in black, but each have a unique colour. "Fancy Blue" for the A53s, and "Mint Cream" for the A53.
