If you're thinking about picking up a new iPhone, you may want to hold off for just a little longer. Right now is the worst time to buy the fruitiest handset. Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 14 in the wee hours of September 8 (AEST), which not only gives you a shiny new option to pick from, it means current generation models will get cheaper.

When Apple revealed the iPhone 13 last year, it cut the price of the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 mini. The iPhone XR, iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max were discontinued, but we saw retailers offer them at a reduced rate to get rid of old stock. We'd expect to see similar happen this year. Precedent suggests the iPhone 11 will go, but we predict that the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13 and 13 mini will stay around at reduced prices.

And hey, waiting also means you'll have Apple's latest and greatest devices to pick from. While new iPhones can feel a bit incremental these days, Apple is expected to change up the family somewhat this time around. Where we have seen the iPhone, iPhone mini, iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max, in previous years we're expecting to see the mini disappear with a "standard" iPhone Max taking its place.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will likely be the same core hardware with different display sizes, erring toward a larger form-factor as opposed to the mini. Rumours suggest the iPhone 14 Max will have the same size 6.7-inch display as we've seen in the Pro Max family so far.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to have the more significant changes this time around. Apple is expected to ditch the notch for a camera-cut selfie camera paired with a pill shape for Face ID tech. A higher resolution 48MP primary camera is on the cards for them, as well as a new processor. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are expected to feature more RAM, but keep last year's A15 processor and the notched display.

Apple's event has been confirmed for 3:00am AEST, September 8. As such, we're expecting pre-orders to kick off on September 9 ahead of a September 23 release date. Pre-orders should start late in the evening, but we won't get exact timing until the phones are announced.
