HMD is launching two new budget phones in Australia this week: the Nokia 4.2 (pictured above) and Nokia 3.2. Priced at $299 and $249 respectively, the new phones are some of the cheaper devices in the Nokia family, but also introduce a number of new features set to be included in the company's handsets going forward. These include facial recognition, a dedicated Google Assistant button, and a power button notification light.
While the phones don't have the same kind of 3D facial recognition you'll find in the iPhone X family - there's only a single camera in its teardrop notch - HMD says the phone uses artificial intelligence to make its face unlock technology more secure. For example, the Nokia 4.2 and Nokia 3.2 (pictured below) differentiate between a face and a photo, and won't unlock your device if your eyes are closed. Unlocking the phones with facial recognition should only take about two seconds.

The handsets both have a dedicated Google Assistant button opposite its power button. A single press will fire up Google Assistant, a double tap will show you a snapshot of your day, and holding it down will start "walkie talkie" mode which lets you have a back-and-forth conversation.
Lastly, the phones' power buttons are surrounded by a notification light. If you've got unread notifications, the light will pulse gently. While this is quite simple, we think it's quite an elegant solution - the light is visible whether your phone is face up or face down.
Key specifications for the Nokia 4.2 include a 5.71-inch 720p+ display, a Snapdragon 439 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 12MP + 2MP rear-facing camera, and a 3,000mAh battery.
Key specifications for the Nokia 3.2 include a 6.2-inch 720p+ display, a Snapdragon 429 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, a 13MP rear-facing camera, and a 4,000mAh battery said to last up to two days.
Both run Android One based on Pie.
You'll be able to get the Nokia 4.2 from JB Hi-Fi and Big W for $299, and the Nokia 3.2 from Harvey Norman and Big W for $249. Both will be available from July 4.
In addition, the pair of devices will be available through Telstra MVNO Pennytel from July 22. Pricing has yet to be confirmed. Here are Pennytel's standard plans:
