Motorola's latest flagship foldable - the Razr 50 Ultra - addresses key criticisms of the previous model, featuring a top-tier chipset, a larger battery, and actual water resistance, rather than just splash-proofing.
While last year's Razr 40 Ultra was powered by a processor that was almost a year old at launch, the Razr 50 Ultra will be one of the first phones to launch with the Snapdragon 8s 3 chipset. Similarly, the Razr 50 Ultra has a 4,000mAh battery - a 300mAh increase on last year. And while the Razr 40 Ultra was splash-proof, the Razr 50 Ultra is rated IPX8 for water resistance, meaning it can survive being submerged.
Other key changes include a larger external display, which now measures in at 4-inch. As with last year's phones, you can run any app you want on the external display while the phone is closed. The main cameras both have a higher megapixel count, with the phone featuring a 50MP primary lens and a 50MP 2x zoom lens. There's also a 32MP selfie camera. Motorola also says it's reengineered the phone's hinge to make it easier to open and close with one hand. As such, the display should also have less of a crease.
Other key specifications include 512GB of storage, 12GB of RAM, eSIM support, and wireless charging. The internal display runs at a 1080p+ resolution and has a 165Hz refresh rate.
The Razr 50 Ultra will sell for $1,699 in Australia, which is a $200 price bump on last year's model. Pre-orders start on July 2, ahead of a July 17 release date. Anyone who pre-orders will get a bonus pair of Moto Buds Plus, valued at $249.
The phone will come in a choice of "spring green", "midnight blue", or "peach fuzz". Each variant has a vegan leather finish. At launch, the Razr 50 Ultra will only be available outright. You won't be able to get it on a mobile plan, but we could see providers start to range it at a later date. Telstra picked up the Razr 40 Ultra a few months after it first launched last year.
A cheaper "standard" Razr 50 will also be coming to Australia a little later this year, but Motorola has yet to confirm a date or pricing. Last year's Razr 40 launched at $999, however.
The Razr 50 is effectively a mid-tier take on the Razr 50 Ultra, featuring a few trade-offs to achieve a cheaper price point. Notably, the external display is much larger than the tiny screen on last year's Razr 40, now measuring in at 3.4-inch. Rather than just displaying basic information and notifications, it can be used to run apps.
Other key specifications for the Razr 50 include a 6.9-inch 1080p+ internal display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a Mediatek Dimensity 7300X processor, 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, IPX8 water-resistance, and a 4,200mAh battery. It has a 50MP primary lens, 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 32MP selfie camera.
Motorola says the Razr 50 will launch "in the coming months".
