Motorola's latest mid-tier handset - the $699 Edge 60 Fusion - is the latest phone to get a higher-than-usual IP69 rating for water resistance.
The Edge 60 Fusion is rated both IP68 and IP69 for water resistance. On top of being able to survive depths of up to 1.5m, the phone is able to handle high-pressure water jets. IP69 is the highest rating for water resistance.
While high-pressure water jets may not be an everyday concern, IP69 ratings have started popping up on Australia-bound devices over the last six months. OPPO led the charge with its flagship Find X8 Pro, but also obtained an IP69 rating for its mid-tier Reno 13 phones and its new budget A5 Pro 5G.
Motorola is the first manufacturer outside of OPPO to launch a phone with an IP69 rating in Australia.
On top of protection against high-pressure water jets, the Edge 60 Fusion has a few other protective traits. It has a Gorilla Glass 7i display, which can survive drops of up to a metre, and a MIL-STD 810H certification. Among other things, this means the Edge 60 Fusion can withstand temperatures as low as -20c.
One longevity-related area where the Edge 60 Fusion falls down is software updates. Motorola is promising three years of operating system updates, and four years of security updates. That's not bad, but it's odd given its cheaper Moto G75 has been promised five years of operating system updates, and six years of security.
Other key specs for the Edge 60 Fusion include a curved 6.7-inch 1220p+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage, eSIM support, and a 5,200mAh battery. In terms of photography, there's a 50MP primary lens and a 13MP ultra-wide on the back, and a 32MP selfie camera on the front.
The Edge 60 Fusion is available from May 22, in a choice of teal, pink, or navy. It will be available outright from retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Amazon, and the Motorola website. The Edge 60 Fusion won't be available on a mobile plan.
Anyone who grabs the phone from JB Hi-Fi or Harvey Norman by June 11 will get a bonus $100 gift card for the respective retailer, and a Motorola 68W wall charger.
