Motorola today announced a wave of new phones destined for Australia across a plethora of price points, but the most interesting is easily the Motorola Edge 20 Fusion, a $499 handset touting a 108MP lens.
Numbers aren't everything when it comes to smartphone photography, and there's more to photo quality than just the lenses themselves, but it will be interesting to see what Motorola has achieved by putting a beastly sensor in a budget phone. Larger megapixel counts don't necessarily capture larger images, instead, the extra pixels are used for extra information. This can help with tasks like low light photography - an area budget phones tend to struggle with.
Key specifications for the Edge 20 Fusion include a 6.7-inch 1080p+ display, a Dimensity 800U 5G processor, 128GB of expandable storage, 128GB of storage, 6GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery. The 108MP primary lens is joined by an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP depth lens.
You'll be able to nab the Moto Edge 20 Fusion from August 26 in a choice of "Electric Graphite" or "Cyber Teal". It will be available from Vodafone, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Big W, The Good Guys, and Mobileciti. We're not expecting to see it at Vodafone until late September, however.
If you're looking for a little more, the next step up is the standard Edge 20 which gets you a faster processor and a 3x optical zoom lens instead of a depth lens.
Key specifications for the Edge 20 include a 6.7-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 778G 5G processor, 128GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and a 4,000mAh battery. The rear-facing camera setup includes a 108MP primary lens, 16MP ultra-wide lens, and 8MP 3x zoom lens.
You'll be able to get it in September for $699 through JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, and Mobileciti. It only comes in "Frosted Onyx".

The final step up is the $899 Edge 20 Pro which has a faster processor, a 108MP camera, and a 5x optical zoom lens. For the most part, these kind of zoom lenses have been reserved for top-tier phones that cost at least $1,500. To see one in a phone for less than a grand is certainly intriguing to say the least.
Key specifications for the Edge 20 Pro include a 6.7-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 870 5G processor, 256GB of storage, 12GB of RAM, and a 4,500mAh battery. The 108MP primary lens and 8MP 5x optical zoom lens are joined by a 16MP ultra-wide lens.
As aforementioned, the Edge 20 Pro will set you back $899 in Australia and you'll be able to get in a choice of "Midnight Sky" or a vegan leather "Indigo Blue". It will be available in September through Vodafone, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, and Mobileciti.
