Last year, Vodafone entered into a network sharing agreement with Optus, whereby the two network providers would share a degree of access with each other. Vodafone got a wider mobile coverage footprint in regional and rural Australia (more than doubling its geographical coverage), while Optus got more robust coverage in other areas.
In its first annual general meeting since the deal, TPG Telecom (owner of Vodafone) reported sentiment from non-Vodafone network customers has gone up by two percentage points, bringing the total to 34%. It sounds like a measurable, if modest win for the network operator. But we mightn’t have seen the end of this story just yet.
Before the deal, the Vodafone network covered 95.4% of the population, which has since risen to 98.5%. So, while 3.1% more of the population can now get Vodafone network reception at home, reportedly only 2% more are considering it.
Two out of three ain’t bad, as they say, but given the deal is only a little over a year old, it’s possible many potential customers don’t yet know they’re now covered by Vodafone. Or, if they do, aren’t aware the Vodafone network now has 4G coverage on par with Optus.
Existing Vodafone postpaid customers appear to be happier with their mobile plans, too, with a small drop in churn from 15.1% to 14.4%.
