LG's recently released Velvet may be a pretty conventional smartphone, but the manufacturer isn't done with experimental form-factors as evidenced by the newly announced Wing - a dual-screen swivel phone.
Seemingly inspired by feature phones, the Wing is a dual-screen smartphone with a display that swivels into a horizontal position to reveal a second screen. It's similar to LG's handsets from over a decade ago, where swivelling the screen gave way to a physical keyboard.
The LG Wing's primary 6.8-inch display is paired with a 3.9-inch screen. The second screen can be used to run a different app - such as a messaging app while you're watching a video on the primary display - but some apps will be able to expand across both displays. For example, video apps can display controls on the second display while. Third party developers will of course have to optimise their apps for the LG Wing.
Unsurprisingly, having a secondary display adds a bit of weight and thickness to the phone. The Wing weighs 260g and is 10mm thick. For comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro Max weighs 226g and is 8.1mm thick, while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 weighs 280g and is 17.78mm thick.
Cameras are another interesting point of difference for the LG Wing. In addition to a fairly typical 64MP primary camera and 13MP ultra-wide lens, the Wing has a secondary 12MP ultra-wide for a "gimbal mode". While shooting in gimbal mode, the secondary screen is used as a grip to stabilise the phone and will display joystick controls.
Other key specifications for the LG Wing include a 5G-ready Snapdragon 765G processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery,
LG has yet to confirm pricing and availability for the Wing. At this stage, it's unclear whether it will see a local release, with an LG spokesperson telling us the company has yet to decide whether it will range it here.
