The mobile version of Bungie’s loot shooter is finally ready to come out of the oven, with Destiny: Rising now slated to launch on August 28.
The move follows closed alpha and beta testing for the title, which was first announced back in 2024.
Those eager to see if Destiny: Rising can live up to the lofty legacy of its namesake can pre-register on both iOS and Android from today. Doing so will net you a number of in-game goodies when the game releases, with greater rewards set to be added should enough players register ahead of time. According to developer NetEase, over five million users have already signed up.
As with the original Destiny and Destiny 2, Destiny: Rising sees players take on the role of Guardians fighting to protect Earth from various alien and phantasmagorical threats. The spin-off is more-or-less a prequel but – as every press release about the game stresses – it takes place both before the events of the first two games in the franchise and also in an alternate timeline.
This confusion around chronology isn’t the only difference Destiny: Rising has on its predecessors. Where the original Destiny and its sequel let you create your own character, Rising relies on a more streamlined hero-based approach akin to gacha games like Genshin Impact or Infinity Nikki. You’ll start the game as a Guardian named Wolf but unlock additional characters as you play. Each hero on the in-game roster brings their own set of unique abilities to the table.
Another key difference is that Destiny: Rising supports both third and first-person perspectives as well as touchscreen controls for casual players and proper gamepad support for those who want to take things a little more seriously.
Although the game was only officially announced just over a year ago, rumours of a Destiny spin-off have been circulating ever since NetEase made a $100 million investment in developer Bungie back in 2018. However, it’s worth noting that Destiny: Rising isn’t made by Bungie. Instead, the development was handled by NetEase’s own games division, which was also responsible for translating Diablo to mobile back in 2022.
Even so, if you’re looking for a game that’ll give the GPU inside your Samsung Galaxy S25 or iPhone 16 Pro a workout, then this might be worth checking out. Check out the trailer below for a snapshot of Destiny: Rising in action.
