Telstra's budget brand Belong is the latest provider to start offering eSIM mobile plans in Australia. Belong was one of the last remaining "major" MVNOs to not offer eSIM, and it doesn't seem like a coincidence that the launch of the new SIM format roughly coincides with the launch of the eSIM-only iPhone Air.
Existing Belong customers can swap to eSIM via the Belong app on iOS or Android or their My Account portal online. New customers will still need to choose a physical SIM when signing up for a new mobile or data-only plan, but will be able to swap after their service is activated.
eSIM - an electronic SIM or embedded SIM - is a rewritable SIM card that’s built into a cellular device like a smartphone or smartwatch. Unlike a physical SIM, there's no need to pop open a slot or pry off a case to put it in; an eSIM never leaves your phone. Instead, you simply download a "software SIM" from your provider of choice.
Here are Belong's SIM-only mobile plans
Now that Belong has launched eSIM, the vast majority of Telstra network providers now offer the tech. The only other major holdout is ALDI Mobile, which has now confirmed it is launching eSIM in October.
More broadly, 22 of the 30 mobile providers in the WhistleOut database currently support eSIM. Other holdouts largely encompass brands on the Optus network, including Aussie Broadband, Coles Mobile, Dodo, iPrimus, Moose Mobile, Swoop, and OnePass Mobile.
