Aussie Broadband co-founder steps down, will start "community-focused" telco

Aussie Broadband's Group Managing Director and co-founder Phillip Britt today announced he will step down at the end of February. Britt plans to use his time to start a new "community-focused" telco in the Gippsland region, called Rural Fibre Co.

"I have always been committed to transforming the digital landscape for communities in the Gippsland region," said Britt in an ASX release. "With my new venture I will be investing in the latest fibre technology for the underserved areas of Gippsland, ensuring the region is not left behind in Australia’s digital future."

While Britt has yet to say much about the new project, it sounds like the core priority will be laying fibre in the Gippsland region. According to Communications Day Managing Editor Rohan Pearce, Britt will be putting in $10 million of his own money into the project, doesn't expect it to make a profit, and plans to offer services with speeds up to 6Gbps. That's six times faster than an NBN 1000 plan. Britt grew up and still lives in the Gippsland region.

Britt will also continue to have a part-time role at Aussie Broadband, as a Special Technical Adviser and stay on the board as a non-executive director.

Aussie Broadband CEO Bill Maher will be appointed Group Chief Executive Officer at the start of March.
