Apple today confirmed it will kick off its next developer conference on June 8 (local time), once again in an online only format. Known as the Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC for short, the event is typically used to showcase Apple's major software updates. Last year Apple revealed new versions of iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS.
The tech giant has already confirmed this year's event will offer "unique insight into the future of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS".
While WWDC is typically focused on software, it is also occasionally used for the odd hardware announcement. Last year, Apple used the event to announce that its computers will be transitioning to iPhone-like ARM processors instead of Intel chips, and the year before it announced a Mac Pro.
Given the app icons on the Memoji in the event logo, there is speculation that Apple could use the event to introduce the augmented reality glasses it has been rumoured to be working on. If this is the case, it's likely the hardware would not be final yet; Apple isn't expected to actually start shipping the glasses until 2022 at the earliest.
Any reveal would more likely be a prototype design or software-related so that developers can start working on apps for the headset.
