Apple and Google have announced a multi-year partnership that will see Google's Gemini models power future Apple Intelligence features, including the next-generation of Siri that is set to launch later this year.
Apple first announced a more personalised version of Siri alongside iOS 18 in mid 2024. The upgraded Siri was set to get onscreen and personal context awareness, which would allow it to take actions based on items on your screen, or execute commands based on information in your phone.
This smarter take on Siri didn't ship in iOS 18, and was also missing in iOS 26 last year, which launched alongside the iPhone 17 family. It is unclear how much of Apple's original vision for a smarter Siri will ship now that the company will use Gemini models.
In a joint statement, the two companies said the following: "After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users."
Apple Intelligence will continue to run natively on Apple devices, such as the iPhone, and on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, rather than using Google's servers.
