Each year Android releases a new major update, always named after a sugary treat beginning with whatever letter comes after last year’s release. For instance, Android Ice Cream Sandwich (I) was followed by Jelly Bean (J), then KitKat (K) and subsequently the current version: Lollipop (L).

The next in line, Android M, is set to be unveiled in a couple of weeks at the Google I/O conference for 2015. With its impending debut, you can expect to hear a few leaks. In particular, there’s plenty of chatter going around that the internal name of Android M is currently Macadamia Nut Cookie, or MNC for short.

That’s certainly a mouthful, but even if the rumour is true it’s no guarantee of a final result. Android KitKat was internally named Key Lime Pie, with an official pie icon leaked straight from Google to back up its story. Ultimately, Google decided to go with another name only shortly before its announcement. Lollipop was called Lemon Meringue Pie internally, possibly as a joke intended for its eventual and unavoidable leak in to the tech press.

Android M may end up being called Macadamia Nut Cookie, but with any luck Google is just having fun trying to stir up a little chatter. Ultimately, we could see anything from Marshmallow (our office favourite), to Milkshake or even another big-brand mention like Mars Bar or M&Ms, although a certain rapper may have a problem with that last one.

Pick any sweet food starting with M and it’s probably got an equal chance of being the official name as MNC currently does.
