A recent study of media consumption in Australia has found that 43% of us have increased the amount of time we’ve spent watching streaming video this year, with many spending twice as much time in front of the TV. We’re spending more on these bills, too.
In a survey from Reviews.org, Aussies estimated that they watch up to 4 hours of TV a day, doubling the average 2 hour watch time in 2019. Most people say they spend between $20 to $30 per month on streaming subscriptions, with a big 20% saying their monthly TV bill was now about $50.
The hidden cost in these statistics is the price of the internet data you’ll need to double your streaming TV viewing habits. Based on our in-house testing, Netflix uses about 250MB per hour when you watch on your phone using the ‘Auto’ data setting.
The good news is that finding a big data phone plan is easier than ever, and you can offset the money you’re pouring into subscription TV costs by saving money on your phone plan as well.
Our Editor’s Pick for this month is one of the newest telcos in the market: Gomo, which has an impressively simple proposition. With a $25 subscription you get unlimited talk and text to standard numbers in Australia, unlimited calls to standard numbers in 15 international destinations and a big 18GB of data on the fast Optus 4G Plus network.
This is already a great deal, but Gomo is currently running a promo that makes it even cheaper. New customers who buy their SIM online before 10 January 2021 will get their first month for just $10 ($25 per month thereafter).
Or put a different way, that’s $10 for 72 hours of Netflix streaming to your smartphone while you put your feet up this summer.
If you activate your Gomo subscription before 28 February 2021 and pay for the first 3 months, you then get the next 3 months free. Together with the $10 offer, the first 6 months of your Gomo service will cost just $60, which is outstanding value when you consider that most similar phone plans will set you back well over $120 for the same period of time, and many don’t include important features like international calls.
Your data renews with your subscription every 30 days, and if you maintain an active subscription but don’t use your full 18GB of data you will rollover unused data on your account, up to 200GB, to splurge on a monster binge sometime in the future. If you think you’re running short on data you can add 5GB to your tally with a $5 data booster through the Gomo app. Unused booster data is also rolled over into your data bank.
Let’s face it, when you’re curled up on the couch watching Nailed It on your iPhone, you don’t want to worry about mobile data limits. A Gomo subscription can give you what you need so you can focus on vegging out.
The big data inclusion is also important for when you want to connect with family and friends this Christmas. The Reviews.org survey also found that 56% of Aussies are video calling more in 2020, thanks in part to travel restrictions and lockdowns. Video calling with services like WhatsApp uses less data than Netflix, but you will find that you chew through 1GB for each 5 or 6 hours you spend chatting with loved ones.
With the holidays on the horizon, and the prospect of spending the season away from people we usually celebrate with, having the data you need is as essential as getting the gifts wrapped and the pudding boiled. Gomo is a great, stress-free option this Christmas.
