Vodafone NBN Plans Review: The Verdict
Vodafone NBN plans aren’t as competitively priced as smaller NBN providers but the speeds are decent (up to NBN 100) and the bundled modem with 4G backup is a nice touch.
What we love
- Covers all important speed tiers
- Good speeds up to NBN 100
- Bundled modem with 4G backup
What could be improved
- Plans are expensive
- Light on extras
- Modem fee (if you don’t stay for two years)
Overall:
Vodafone is one of those telecommunications-straddling providers that’s as good at offering a range of SIM-only and prepaid mobile plans as it is selling NBN plans. Much like in the telco space, Vodafone competes with the likes of Telstra NBN and Optus NBN by not just offering internet but also a bundled NBN-compatible modem with 4G backup to help simplify getting online and to keep you connected in the event of an NBN outage.
Let’s take a closer look at Vodafone’s NBN plans in terms of overall value, support avenues and extras. But first, check out Vodafone’s range of NBN plans:
Vodafone NBN plans: Value
To determine the value of an NBN plan, we take the cost of a plan and compare that to a provider’s self-reported typical evening download speeds. The dollar-to-data result is then the base used to compare NBN plans, particularly those that are closely matched in price. We stick with typical monthly pricing, too, instead of promotional pricing periods, plus any plan extras aren’t factored in.
With the theory out of the way, here’s how Vodafone’s NBN 50 plans compare to the competition:
And here are Vodafone’s NBN 100 plans in comparison to key competitors:
Going by the pricing in the plan comparisons above, Vodafone NBN plans are among the most expensive at any speed tier. While that pricing secures 50Mbps download speeds for its NBN 50 plan, that’s standard among providers these days.
Self-reported typical evening download speeds start to slow as you climb up speed tiers. For instance, the 90Mbps download speeds for Vodafone’s NBN 100 plan is okay but can’t compete with the faster, cheaper offerings from SpinTel, Exetel, Belong, iPrimus, MyRepublic, Dodo, and Tangerine.
What are typical evening speeds?
Typical evening speeds refer to the NBN download speeds you can expect during the busiest hours of the day—typically between 7pm and 11pm—due to congestion.
Because of the way the NBN is designed, just paying for an NBN 100 plan doesn’t guarantee you’ll get those speeds the entire time. If you want great speeds during peak hours, you’ll want to look for a provider that reports high typical evening speeds.

All Vodafone NBN plans come with no data caps and no-contracts. The main choice outside of speed is whether you want to opt for a Vodafone NBN plan that comes with a modem or one without. Both plans are technically priced the same, but there’s an exit fee for the Vodafone WiFi Hub 2.0 if you choose the modem plan and leave before 24 months. The exit fee costs $7.50 less per month ($180 total cost), which means if you leave after 12 months, you’re up for a $90 exit fee.
Vodafone NBN plans: Support
Ideally, when you sign up for an NBN plan with Vodafone or any other provider, you don’t have to worry about tech support. But sometimes things go wrong. When this happens, we like to know that a provider has your back with multiple support pathways. Full disclosure: we deliberately avoid speaking about the quality of support because we know that support experiences differ from person to person. Instead, we focus on the different ways a customer can get support from a provider.
Here’s how Vodafone’s NBN support pathways fare against some of its competitors:

While it’s odd that Vodafone doesn’t provide email for its NBN plans, there are four main ways to get in touch if you need help. If your support need is urgent, you can contact Vodafone by phone at 1300 650 410. For those who prefer digital interactions, Vodafone support can be reached on social media or their live chat. And Vodafone also offers support via its retail stores.

Vodafone NBN plans: Extras
If you’re after a perky NBN provider that offers plenty of extras, you’re likely looking elsewhere. Here’s how Vodafone’s NBN extras compare to its competitors:

The main extra Vodafone offers is the $0 upfront cost for the Vodafone NBN modem, which is the Vodafone WiFi Hub 2.0 modem-router. This is a preconfigured NBN-compatible device that also has 4G backup via the Vodafone mobile network. If there are any Vodafone NBN outages, you can stay online with download speeds up to 12Mbps.
Vodafone also offers a 30-day ‘network satisfaction guarantee’, whereby you can return the WiFi Hub 2.0 modem-router in its original packaging within 10 days of cancelling and not incur any costs.
For those users who already have a Vodafone postpaid mobile plan, you can save $15 a month on your NBN if you stick with Vodafone for your home internet.
