After almost two years of limbo, Google Assistant is now available to Australians with a Sonos One or Sonos Beam, making them the first smart speakers to support both Google's Assistant and Amazon's Alexa.
When using Google Assistant on your Sonos speaker, it essentially works like a Google Home. Voice controls can be used to play songs, control smart home devices, or get updates about your day. For example, you can issue commands like "Okay Google, wake me up at 7am to Cattle Decapitation". Anything you can do on a Google Home, Google Home Mini, or Google Home Max should work with Sonos.
While the pair of Sonos speakers support both Google Assistant and Alexa, you can only use one virtual assistant at a time. However, if you have multiple smart Sonos speakers, each speaker can be configured with a different assistant (provided they aren't grouped in the same room).
To get Google Assistant running on your Sonos One or Sonos Beam, you'll just need to install the latest software update.
