Connected speaker manufacturer Sonos has announced its first new consumer-grade devices since 2024: the Sonos Play and the Sonos Era 100 SL.
The Play is a new portable speaker designed for both indoor and outdoor usage, designed to sit between the Roam 2 and the Move 2, in terms of both size and price. While the Play isn't as portable as the Roam 2, its 1.3kg weight should be much more manageable than the chonky 3kg Move 2. In terms of price, the Play will sell for $499 locally, compared to $299 for the Roam 2 or $799 for Roam 2.
If anything, the Play feels like a battery-powered take on 2023's Era 100. The components are quite similar, but with two additional passive radiators to enhance bass. Sonos is promising up to 24 hours of battery life, and there's a wireless charging cradle in the box. Notably, Sonos is selling a battery replacement kit for the Play, allowing users to swap out the battery down the line if it degrades too much.
The Play also benefits from an IP67 rating for water-resistance, meaning it can survive submersion.
As a Sonos product, the Play naturally works with the rest of the Sonos ecosystem. It supports audio over WiFi, Bluetooth, or line-in, and it is the first Sonos product to allow grouping over Bluetooth.
Joining the Play is the Era 100 SL, which is a simpler product. It's 2023's Era 100, but without a microphone. As such, it is also a little cheaper, retailing for $289 rather than $319.
Both the Play and Era 100 SL are available to pre-order now, ahead of a March 31 release date.
As aforementioned, the pair of speakers are Sonos' first new major product announcements since 2024. While the company typically released multiple new devices each year, it kept quiet last year following a botched app launch.
Sonos introduced a revamped app alongside the Ace headphones in May 2024, removing functionality some users relied on, while also introducing bugs and instability.
The controversy culminated in the company introducing seven new commitments to rebuild trust earlier this month. These include better pre-launch testing, extended warranties, and establishing a customer advisory board.
