The latest device in the Amazon Echo range, the Alexa-powered Amazon Echo Show 8, will launch in Australia on February 26 at a retail price of $229. However, Amazon is running an awfully generous pre-order offer for those keen to get in early. If order an Echo Show 8 ahead of general availability, you'll get it for half-price. That's just $114.50, which makes it even cheaper the Echo Show 5, Amazon's entry-level smart display.
The Echo Show 8 sits between the Echo Show 5 and the Echo Show in Amazon's smart display family, in terms of both size and price. It has an 8-inch HD display that's a little larger than the Show 5's 5.5-inch display, but a tad smaller than the Echo Show's 10-inch display. And at its regular price of $229, it's $100 pricier than the Show 5, but $120 cheaper than the standard Show. It's very much a middle child.
Thanks to the display, the Echo Show 8 can provide visual information to go with any queries you ask Alexa. The screen can also be used for video playback through Amazon Prime Video, for controlling or viewing smart home appliances, and for video chat with other Echo Show owners. If you're not too keen on an always connected device with a camera, the Echo Show 8 has an integrated shutter so you can cover the lens while you're not using it.
