The NBN supercharged Australian internet, with some now able to get plans as fast as 2,000Mbps. That kinda connectivity was almost unimaginable around a decade ago.
If you've got the need for speed, there's a good chance you want the fastest NBN provider you can get. To help, we're gonna take a look at the fastest options for internet in Australia.
We'll start by looking at the fastest plans based on the typical evening speeds reported by NBN providers, and then we'll look at the fastest NBN providers according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) quarterly performance reports.
The fastest internet plans in Australia
If you're looking for the fastest NBN speeds you can get, you'll want an NBN 2000, NBN 1000, NBN 750, or NBN 500 plan. These plans can hit speeds in line with the numbers in their name - an NBN 2000 plan maxes out at 2,000Mbps, for example, while an NBN 500 plan maxes out at 500Mbps.
The fastest NBN 2000 plans
NBN 2000 plans launched in September last year, but are only available from a small amount of providers. Aussie Broadband, Superloop, and MATE are currently the only three providers in our database with NBN 2000 plans.
MATE is the fastest of these, reporting typical evening speeds of 1.83Gbps, followed by Aussie Broadband with typical evening speeds of 1.81Gbps. Superloop is just a little slower, and says customers will get speeds of 1.7Gbps between 7pm and 11pm.
Here are the NBN 2000 plans currently in our database:
The fastest NBN 1000 plans
SpinTel currently has the fastest NBN 1000 plan in our database, reporting typical evening speeds of 1,000Mbps. MATE follows with typical evening speeds of 913Mbps, and Swoop is just a little behind, with typical evening speeds of 890Mbps. Aussie Broadband sits in fourth, reporting 875Mbps during busy hours.
The above providers are followed by Superloop, AGL, and Origin, who all report 860Mbps. Flip, Vodafone, and Kogan are next with 850Mbps, and Dodo and iPrimus are right behind with 840Mbps. Optus, amaysim, TPG, and iiNet follow with 820Mbps, trailed by Telstra and Belong with 815Mbps.
Here are the fastest NBN 1000 plans:
The fastest NBN 750 plans
NBN 750 plans are a slight step down from NBN 1000, but are still plenty fast. However, for most, we think dropping down to NBN 500 is a better option. Instead of paying over $100 per month once introductory offers are over, you're typically looking at somewhere betweenere between $80 and $90 per month. In most cases, the extra 250Mbps of speeds won't make a huge difference, so we'd take the saving instead, especially since NBN 750 upload speeds are the same as NBN 500.
If you do want NBN 750, SpinTel, Superloop, Aussie Broadband, Telstra, and Swoop are currently all reporting typical evening speeds of 750Mbps on this speed tier.
Dodo, iPrimus, Vodafone, Kogan, TPG, and iiNet are a little slower, reporting 740Mbps during peak hours, followed by MATE with 713Mbps.
Here are the fastest NBN 750 plans:
The fastest NBN 500 plans
NBN 500 plans effectively replace NBN 100 plans for those on FTTP and HFC, but pricing is still in line with the older, slower speed tier. This makes them a Goldilocks plan of sorts, with very fast speeds but a more reasonable price than what was previously associated with high-speed NBN.
So far, a good number of providers are reporting typical evening speeds on NBN 500 plans. These include SpinTel, Dodo, TPG, Moose, Kogan, Tangerine, iiNet, Superloop, amaysim, Telstra, Belong, Optus, Aussie Broadband, Vodafone, Exetel, Origin, iPrimus, and Flip.
Here are the fastest NBN 500 plans:
Fast NBN plan availability
Plans faster than 100Mbps are only available to those with FTTP or HFC NBN connection types. Most Australians on FTTN or FTTC internet are able to upgrade to an FTTP connection for free by ordering an NBN 500 plan or faster from an eligible provider.
All remaining FTTN premises will be upgraded by the end of 2030, with the majority to get FTTP. A small number may be moved to a different technology type, however.
If you can't get a high-speed NBN, 5G home internet could be an alternative worth considering. Uncapped 5G home internet plans can reach download speeds of over 200Mbps during peak hours, making them twice as fast as an NBN 100 plan.
Here's a look at the uncapped 5G home internet plans currently on the market:

#5: Optus' fastest NBN plans
Optus was the fifth fastest provider in the final ACCC report, with its customers achieving 101% of maximum plan speeds during busy hours.
Here are Optus' fastest NBN plans:
Optus reports typical evening speeds of 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans, 100Mbps on NBN 100 plans, 500Mbps on NBN 500 plans, and 820Mbps on NBN 1000 plans.
Optus NBN plans can be bundled with an Optus modem with 4G backup. Just note that if you do this and leave within your first three years, you'll be hit with a hardware fee. This is equivalent to $8.50 per month for each month left in your three-year term.
How can I speed up my internet?
There are a few key ways to speed up your internet. The first is changing your plan. If you're on an NBN 50 plan and have added a bunch of new devices to your house, it might be time to upgrade to NBN 100 or NBN 500, depending on your technology type.
If you're already on the maximum speed tier your connection allows, you could shop around for providers with better typical evening speeds. While its very easy to find NBN 100 plans and NBN 500 plans that max out their typical evening speeds, you tend to see more of a difference between providers on NBN 1000 plans. On NBN 1000 plans, typical evening speeds can range from as low as 700Mbps to as high as 1,00Mbps.
If you're already on a fast internet plan but don't feel like it's delivering on speed, there could be issues with your hardware at home. If you're on a high-speed plan, you need a fast enough modem to match. You'll ideally want something with WiFi 6 at a minimum. If you're after an NBN 2000 plan, you'll need a WiFi 7 router with a 2.5Gbps WAN port.
Fastest NBN FAQs
What is the fastest NBN plan?
An NBN 2000 plan is the fastest internet available in Australia. NBN 2000 plans are only available to FTTP or HFC and technology types, however. Most other fixed-line connections are limited to NBN 100 at best.
However, only a small number of providers sell NBN 2000 plans. NBN 1000 is one step down, but much more widely available and much cheaper.
Who is the fastest internet provider in Australia?
MATE currently has the fastest NBN 2000 plan in the WhistleOut database, reporting typical evening speeds of 1,830Mbps. SpinTel has the fastest NBN 1000 plan in the WhistleOut database, reporting speeds of 1,000Mbps.
Why is the ACCC no longer monitoring NBN performance?
The ACCC stopped reporting on NBN performance due to how similar speeds are between providers. When the report was established, average download speeds were between 80% and 85% of maximum plan speeds during busy hours. This has now risen to close to 100%, across all providers.
