iPad Pro

Despite worldwide store closures, Apple overnight announced a new iPad Pro. The new iPad Pro builds on the 2018 model, with a whole host of improvements including a faster processor and better cameras. However, the most meaningful feature may be a software update offering mouse and trackpad support.

iPadOS, Apple's iPad operating system, already had rudimentary mouse support available as an accessibility feature. iPadOS 13.OS 13.4 expands on this, adding a proper cursor as well as gestures for those using their iPad with a trackpad.

Apple also announced a "Magic Keyboard" accessory as a companion to the new iPad Pro - a new keyboard cover that also has a trackpad. Other changes include passthrough USB-C charging and a floating design that elevates your iPad Pro to a more comfortable angle. The Magic Keyboard is compatible with the new iPad Pro, as well as 2018 iPad Pro models.

You don't have to pick up a Magic Keyboard if you want mouse support, however. All iPads running iPadOS 13 will get the upgrade, and you'll be able to pair them with any Bluetooth mouse or trackpad. Apple's Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 will almost certainly work best if you're after gesture support.

The new iPad Pro also marks the first time an iPad has more than a single camera. On the back, you'll find a 12MP primary lens and 10MP ultra-wide lens. A more interesting inclusion is a LIDAR scanner that will be used for depth sensing and augmented reality applications. This is similar to the Time of Flight cameras we've been seeing on Android smartphones for quite some time now, and a possible hint at what's to come when Apple announces new iPhones in September.

The new iPad Pro is available to order online right now, ahead of a March 25 release date. The Magic Keyboard won't be available until May. Pricing is as follows:

11-inch iPad Pro (Wi-Fi only)

  • 128GB: $1,329
  • 256GB: $1,499
  • 512GB: $1,839
  • 1TB: $2,169

11-inch iPad Pro (4G)

  • 128GB: $1,579
  • 256GB: $1,749
  • 512GB: $2,089
  • 1TB: $2,429

12.9-inch iPad Pro (Wi-Fi only)

  • 128GB: $1,649
  • 256GB: $1,819
  • 512GB: $2,159
  • 1TB: $2,499

12.9-inch iPad Pro (4G)

  • 128GB: $1,899
  • 256GB: $2,069
  • 512GB: $2,409
  • 1TB: $2,749

You'll pay $499 for an 11-inch Magic Keyboard, or $589 for a 12.9-inch model. The second generation Apple Pencil is still priced at $219.

We're expecting to see Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all offer the new iPad Pro on a plan.
