Refurbished iPads can be a real gold mine for savings, you can pick one up through Apple or through a range of reputable retailers. Buying from the Apple orchard is by far the cheapest option, but of course, there are always benefits to sticking with the supplier.

Hot tip

Before you purchase any refurbished device consider don't forget to consider its digital lifespan - that's things such as important software and security updates.

The original iPad through to its fourth generation doesn't support the current version of iPadOS. So while they might be a steal, you might not find the software as optimal as you'd like. Thankfully Apple tends to provide updates to its devices for longer than most so you'll still find updates available for your fifth-generation iPad and so on.

Do any telcos sell refurbished iPads?

Yes, at the moment Boost Mobile is the only telco that currently sells refurbished iPads.

Boost Mobile's refurbished iPads come with a 12-month warranty and are backed by a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. They undergo a 72-point inspection process to make sure they work just as you'd expect.

Boost sells refurbished iPads that connect to the internet via WiFi and those that can connect via 4G or 5G.

What to expect from a preowned iPad

There are, of course, heaps of other reputable resellers of iPads out there. Amazon, Kogan, and Catch are just some of the more popular refurbished iPad sellers in Australia.

Each seller has its own system for refurbishing devices, but there are industry standards that need to be met as well as warranty requirements as outlined by Australian Consumer Law.

Regardless of who you go with, you are entitled to a minimum 12-month warranty on the device and its parts. This warranty won’t cover accidental damage or issues caused by misuse of the tablet but if there are technical problems that are the fault of the manufacturer or refurbisher you are entitled to a replacement, refund, or repair.

Of course, preloved devices are never going to be as good as brand new, but you can anticipate that your refurbed iPad will:

  • Be a genuine Apple iPad
  • Have at least 80% battery capacity
  • Be clear of leftover data from its previous owner

You may find that your refurbished iPad has some superficial damage such as light scratches or scuffs. Generally, retailers use some kind of grading system to let you know what kind of conditions to expect.

You'll find the situation is similar if not the same with refurbished iPhones and refurbished Samsung phones.

One thing to consider is how long your refurbished iPad will continue to receive iPadOS and security updates.

At the time of writing Apple still supports iPadOS 15 through 17. This means the iPads that no longer receive security updates are:

  • iPad Air (1st generation and under)
  • iPad (4th generation and under)
  • iPad mini (3rd generation and under)

Refurbished iPad FAQs

Who has the cheapest refurbished iPads?

It really depends on which model and at what time. The retailers mentioned in this guide are always sourcing new refurbs which means the overall prices can shift.

At the time of writing the cheapest iPad Pro, iPad, iPad Air and iPad mini models are available from Catch.

Is it safe to buy a second-hand iPad?

Yes, especially if you consider refurbished options from legitimate retailers. If you have problems you are still entitled to certain consumer rights protections whereas you have no protections if you're buying a second-hand iPad from some guy down the street.
