We've spent some time with LG's 2017 flagship - the LG G6. Here's what we thought.
Sony's Xperia XZ2 is a perfectly capable phone with one major flaw: it fails to standout. There's nothing overly wrong with it, but there's not much to get excited about either.
The Huawei P20 Pro's camera is good enough to make you forget almost any caveat, but fortunately there's very few of those. Better yet, at just $1,099 outright, the P20 Pro is one of the most affordable top-tier smartphones around.
The Nokia 6.1 is a killer new affordable smartphone unfettered by bloatware, and thanks to Android One, you know it will stay up to date for years.
Sony has defied the doomsayers and made a new smartphone worth owning. A serious sense of style elevates the Xperia XA2 above its midrange contemporaries, and a solid battery life and camera don’t hurt.
The Amazon Echo can do a lot - more than any other smart speaker - but it's not all useful. While Amazon's openness to developers give the Echo and Alexa a clear advantage over competitors, it's still early days for smart speakers. The Echo can do a couple of tasks really well, but there's also a lot of undercooked "skills" around. We're hoping that these will continue to mature, but for the time being, Echo is perhaps best seen as a potential look at the future of computing.
The HTC U11 Life is a mixed bag. It's one of the cheapest water-resistant phones available and it's the first device in Australia to run Android One, but it looks dated and doesn't have a headphone jack. If you want a water-resistant phone on a budget, the U11 Life is a top choice. Otherwise, it's just fine.
Apple's HomePod is the best sounding smart speaker around, but it's far from the smartest smart speaker. Truly excellent sound quality is offset by Siri's comparatively limited capabilities and how entrenched HomePod is in the Apple ecosystem. A few ifs-and-buts coupled with the $499 asking price mean Apple's first smart speaker is best suited to the existing faithful. HomePod isn't something you buy on a whim.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are both great smartphones, but not huge steps forward for Samsung or its fans. Improvements to the camera are welcome, but there are a few other key areas in need of attention.
The Beoplay E8s are stellar wire-free earbud with sound quality that surpasses their small size. They're comfortable, they look great, but if you want a pair, get ready to part with a pretty penny.
Our first look at the Alcatel 5.
