Kogan Mobile Plans Review: The Verdict

Kogan Mobile plans are light on support pathways and meaningful extras but they tend to offer plenty of data and great value.

What we love
  • Great value prepaid plans
  • Bonus data
What could be improved
  • Minimal support pathways
  • Light on extras
The essentials

Kogan may be a brand name that’s more synonymous with online shopping these days, but the value found as an online retailer carries over to Kogan Mobile as a telco. In telco terms, the ranking of most expensive to cheapest plans in terms of network providers goes Telstra, Optus, then Vodafone. And the same is true of each respective network’s Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs).

Before we jump into the particulars of Kogan Mobile, check out the telco’s plans below:

Kogan Mobile plans: Value

When looking at value, use 30GB as a north star for comparing plans in our database, to help contrast plans on an even playing field.

This is so we can boil things down to a straightforward dollar-to-data comparison, ignoring temporary data buffs or other promotional extras outside of price and data. Check out the daily updating list below for an idea of how Kogan Mobile fares next to its peers:

The list above is a mix of SIM-only and prepaid plans, where the former tends to have better overall value than the latter. In this top-level comparison, Kogan Mobile’s value is towards the middle. Prepaid starter packs notwithstanding—which tend to skew the ongoing value of a plan with initial discounts—paying $25 for 45G of data each month is great value. The value is even better when you consider it in the context of the prepaid space, where gomo is the main competitor.

Kogan Mobile network coverage
Kogan Mobile is a Vodafone MVNO, which means it sells plans on the Vodafone 4G network. The Vodafone 4G network is slightly smaller than Optus and Telstra’s respective 4G networks in terms of the percentage of the population it reaches but is still at a very respectable 96% of the Australian population. Use the interactive map above to see how the Vodafone 4G network fares (and, therefore, Kogan Mobile) in your neck of the woods. A moderate shade of purple indicates Vodafone 4G coverage, while lighter shades highlight 3G and darker means 5G (if you check those boxes). Note that the map is only an approximate guide of coverage in terms of outside signal, and it may be impacted by buildings and other factors. Alternatively, punch in your address while searching for a new mobile phone plan, then click or tap the ‘Search’ button. The results on the next page are tailored to the address you enter.

Kogan Mobile plans: Support

This section focuses on the number of support pathways offered by telcos, rather than the quality of the support. By focusing on quantity over quality we can paint a clearer picture of how much a telco has invested in support avenues for its customers, instead of focusing on qualitative experiences that may vary between people.

Below is how Kogan Mobile fares in comparison to its peers:

Kogan Support Options Compared
Provider In-store Call Email Chat Social

amaysim -
Boost - -
felix - -
Telstra -
Optus -
Vodafone - -
Woolworths Mobile - - -
ALDI - - - -
TPG -
Circles.Life -

Kogan Mobile is incredibly light on support pathways. There’s no online chat, you won’t find support on social media, there’s no store to visit, and you can’t email or reach out via an online contact form. There is a self-paced FAQ in the Kogan Mobile Help Centre, but the main way to get direct support is by dialling 12612 from a Kogan Mobile or by calling 1300 056 426 from any phone. Kogan support is available between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, seven days a week.

Kogan Mobile plans do come with some basic features like visual voicemail, plus you earn Qantas Frequent Flyer Points for every dollar spent. At the time of writing, Kogan Mobile was also bundling a 12-month Kogan First subscription. The only other extra note is that Kogan Mobile lets users buy international call packs for 250 minutes of calls per 30 days. It costs $5 for 10 countries, $10 for 15 countries and $15 for 20 countries. The more expensive options include all of the countries from the cheaper bolt-ons.

Here's the full list of countries:

  • United States of America
  • China
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • India
  • Singapore
  • Germany
