ALDI Mobile Plans Review: The Verdict
ALDI is best known for it's surprisingly good quality at low prices and ALDI Mobile SIM plans ring true to the brand offering solid value for the price. However much like shopping with the discount diety, the value is the main selling point.
What we love
- Plans have good value
- International call inclusions are good
What could be improved
- Not many support options
Overall:
When you're on the search for a new mobile plan the market can seem inundated. There is plenty to consider; what kind of coverage do you need, how much data, prepaid or postpaid? It can be temping to stick with one of The Big Three telcos, but there are plenty of smaller providers to consider.
ALDI may be known for it's Special Buys, but are its mobile plans actually anything special? In this ALDI Mobile review we'll look at value, support options, and the extras you can get for nabbing your next mobile plan with the budget supermarket giant.
Before we start, here's ALDI's current range of SIM-only mobile plans:
ALDI Mobile plans: Value
Judging value on different phone plans is tricky. We don't have standard phone plan inclusions in Australia so every provider does it slightly differently. Generally the cheap plans don't have the best data to dollar value, but the bigger plans with the more generous data allowances are probably offering more than you need. You shouldn't be paying for data you aren't using.
Based on extrapolated data from the ACCC, the average Aussie is currently using about 30GB per month. To assess value, we've looked at how much a telco charges for its cheapest plan that meets that criteria, excluding discounts, promos, and extras.
Here is how ALDI's cheapest plan with at least 30GB compares to the competition:
ALDI does have pretty good value for money, but the problem is the lack of choice. The provider only offers two options around the average usage; 20GB for $35 or 40GB for $35. It's not bad value, but if you're an average user sitting at around 30GB per month then you'll either be under, or over stocked.
ALDI Mobile coverage
ALDI Mobile uses the Telstra Wholesale network which covers 98.8% of the Australian population. Telstra's wholesale network is smaller than Telstra proper, but it still covers a higher percentage of the population than either Vodafone or Optus.
Above you can see how the Telstra MVNO network compares to the full network. Note that we are only comparing 3G and 4G coverage as Telstra doesn't currently offer 5G access to its MVNO providers.
Due to the wide access, ADLI Mobile is likely to be suitable for most Australians, however, if you live in remote or rural towns then it is worth checking to see which provider offers the best service.
If you want to check if a certain address has Telstra coverage, you can use our coverage checker tool to do so.
All you need to do is punch in your address when searching for a new phone plan. After you've done so and hit Search, you can jump straight to the coverage map by tapping See Coverage Map and then tapping Click To Activate Interactive Map.This map will show you what kind of coverage you have in your area. 5G coverage is highlighted using the darkest shade of purple, 4G in the medium shade, and 3G in the lightest.
Coverage maps are only approximate, only show outdoor coverage, and may be impacted by local conditions such as buildings.
ALDI Mobile plans: Support
Rating support without actually having multiple different problems with a provider is near impossible. We can't possibly speak for the quality of support from each telco, but we can talk about the avenues in which you can reach out for support.
While we won't judge qualitativley, the quantity of support options speaks to how large of an investment providers put into their customer support. The more money, the more they probably value a good customer experience.
Here is how ALDI Mobile's support options compare to the competition:
