Mario's smartphone debut - Super Mario Run - will be making its way to Android smartphones and tablets in March, following its iPhone launch in December last year.
Super Mario Run is a one button platformer that takes some inspiration from the endless runner genre. Mario will move by himself, but players have to jump. While most endless runners feature just one "endless" map, Super Mario Run is broken up into 24 individual levels across six worlds.
On iPhone, Super Mario Run is free to download, but will require a one off in-app purchase of $14.99 to unlock the full game. Regardless of whether you buy the full game or not, Super Mario Run requires an active internet connection to play (either through Wi-Fi or mobile data). This is to help combat piracy.
We expect pricing to stay the same when the game launches on Android. Android users can sign up for a release notification via the Google Play Store.
The news coincides with the announcement of Nintendo's second smartphone game: Fire Emblem Heroes. Fire Emblem Heroes is a turn-based strategy that will hit Android on February 2, and iOS at a later date. Pricing has yet to be confirmed. Android users can pre-register their interest through the Google Play Store.
