Sony announces Oreo updates, but snubs Oz with new Xperia phones

Sony Xperia XZ1

Sony Mobile has unveiled two brand new Xperia flagship releases – but in a snub of epic proportions, neither one will see an official Australian release.

The Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact are the newest members of Sony’s premium smartphone family, and while both devices offer powerful processing, a new-and-improved Motion-Eye camera, and High-Resolution Audio, the company has decided not to bring the new range to Australian shores.

However, it’s not all bad news for Australian Sony fans. If you’re a current or prospective Xperia owner, get hyped: Sony has confirmed that Android 8.0 Oreo is coming to the following devices:

Both the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will run Oreo straight out-of-the-box, although you’ll need to import that box from an overseas seller if you’re located in Australia. There’s no word on when the newest Android update will begin rolling out to the above list of devices.

Even though you won’t be able to buy either new XZ1 phone from Australian retailers or telcos, the phone will still be compatible with Australian mobile networks, provided you buy it unlocked. We can’t tell you what to expect in terms of price, but here’s a quick overview of each new phone.

The Xperia XZ1

If you’re after the very best in premium features and design, the bigger, badder XZ1 is for you. You’ll get a 5.2-inch Full HD HDR display, combined with Sony’s TRILUMINOS Display and Dynamic Contrast Enhancer for bright, crisp images, plus High-Resolution Audio and S-Force Front Surround for crystal-clear sound.

Under the hood, the XZ1 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor (offering download speeds of up to 1Gbps), plus a 2,700mAh battery with Smart Stamina mode and Qnovo Adaptive Charging.

Camera-wise, Sony’s Motion Eye features an Exmor RS image sensor, Predictive Capture and Autofocus burst in the rear, plus a 13-megapixel camera in front. And in terms of new features, there’s a new 3D creator app for fast, easy 3D scans of people and objects.

The XZ1 includes 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal memory, and features a MicroSD card slot for up to 256GB of additional storage. Colour options include Moonlit Blue, Venus Pink, Warm Silver, or Black.

The Xperia XZ1 Compact

Want something smaller? The XZ1 Compact is the flagship XZ1’s baby brother, featuring a 4.6-inch screen size, but with similar internals to the XZ1. You’ll also get the aforementioned Motion Eye camera, the 3D Creator app, plus a super-wide angle front camera with a 120° Field of View option.

The Compact also includes High-Res Audio, and (like the XZ) is IP65/IP68 water and dust-resistant. You’ll get 64GB of storage with a 256GB microSD card slot, and can select from White Silver, Black, Horizon Blue or Twilight Pink colour options.

While competing manufacturers are opting for a near bezel-less change in design, Sony’s new Xperia phones are physically similar to models from four or five years ago. Hopefully for Sony, there’s a chunk of the phone-owning market with a preference for bezels and square edges that will appreciate the company’s commitment to classic design.
