Optus today fills out its mid-range models with a new waterproof offering, the new Sony Xperia M4 Aqua.
The ‘yes’ telco is keeping it cheap too, with the M4 available for $0 on all Optus plans of $40 per month and over.
Despite being Sony’s cheaper option (compared with the Xperia Z3 and upcoming Z4), the new M4 Aqua is packed with some interesting new features. It will be Sony first phone to ship with a new Qualcomm Octa-Core processor, and it comes with the latest available version of the Google Android OS, Lollipop.
The M4 Aqua lives up to its name with an IP65/8 protection rating, indicating it is completely resistant to solid particles, like sand and dust, and is protecting against low pressure jets of water — meaning it should survive a dunk in the pool.
Sun-lovers will appreciate the new ‘cap-less’ micro USB charging port, too. One of the drawbacks for previous waterproof phones has been that all the external ports on the handset had to covered by annoying flaps to seal the phone. Sony has figured out a way to protect the M4 from water, while still having open charging ports. Very clever.
Size-wise, the M4 Aqua is slightly smaller than the Xperia Z3, with a 5-inch screen 720p resolution screen. It shares the Z3’s super-slim profile though, at only 7.3mm deep, and the same tempered glass chassis around the handset.
All in all, the M4 Aqua looks like an awesome addition to the Optus range.
