Mario's smartphone debut - Super Mario Run - will launch through the iOS App Store on December 15.
Super Mario Run reimagines Nintendo's iconic franchise as one-handed experience that takes inspiration from the endless runner genre. Mario will move by himself, but players have to jump. While most endless runners feature just one "endless" map, Super Mario Run is broken up into 24 individual levels across six worlds.
Super Mario Run will be free to download, but will require a one off in-app purchase of $14.99 to unlock the full game.
The game was first announced during Apple's September iPhone 7 event, where Mario-creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage alongside the likes of Apple CEO Tim Cook. While Super Mario Run isn't Nintendo's first smartphone app, it is the company's first full-fledged smartphone game (Pokémon Go wasn't developed by Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company is a separate business entity that Nintendo happens to have stake in).
iPhone and iPad users can be notified as to when the game is available using the game's App Store page.
Super Mario Run will also be available for Android devices, but a release date has yet to confirmed.
