Even if you're not waiting for a new iPhone to arrive, your current device is set to get a bit of love from Apple. The latest version of Apple's mobile operating system - iOS 12 - is now available as an over-the-air download for most existing iPhone and iPad models.
If you've got an Apple Watch, you'll be able to upgrade it to watchOS 5 after you paired iPhone is running iOS 12.
What's new in iOS 12?
Key new features in iOS 12 include digital wellbeing tools, personalised Animoji (dubbed Memoji), customised Siri commands, notification grouping, improved augmented reality support, and group FaceTime. In addition, Apple says performance improvements are at the heart of iOS 12, especially when it comes to older devices. The company says that apps will launch 40% faster, the keyboard will come up 50% faster, and the camera will be 70% faster on older iOS devices thanks to the software.
How do I install iOS 12?
Upgrading to iOS 12 is easy. To do so, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad
- Select General
- Tap Software Update
The upgrade to iOS 12 is a fairly large download, so make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi beforehand. Exact size will depend on your device, but expect a download around 2GB.
Can I upgrade to iOS 12?
While each new version of iOS typically sees Apple axe support for at least one iPhone or iPad, any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 11 will be able to upgrade to iOS 12. This means iPhones as old as the iPhone 5s can install Apple's latest mobile operating system.
All iPad Pro and iPad Air models will get the update when it comes to tablets. The standard "iPad" will be upgraded to iOS 12, as will the iPad mini 2 and up.
Only the sixth generation iPod touch is upgradable to iOS 12.
