Vodafone has expanded its mobile plan range with a truly unlimited data plan with no speed caps. While Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all currently offer plans with unlimited data, they're capped at speeds as low as 1.5Mbps and are designed to supplement a primary allowance.
On the other hand, Vodafone's new unlimited plan will constantly deliver the maximum network speeds available at the time for $85 per month. The plan is available as a SIM-only option or can be paired with a new phone.
At present, the only similar offer in market comes from Vodafone MVNO felix where you'll get all you can eat data but capped at speeds of 20Mbps, which is just a tad slower than an NBN 25 connection.
While Vodafone's unlimited mobile plan does genuinely offer more data than you can shake a stick at, there are a few catches worth noting. The most notable is you'll only get a 30GB per month hotspot data allowance for when you're tethering your phone to your laptop. If you go over that allowance, your hotspot usage will be slowed to 2Mbps Vodafone clearly doesn't want you to use this plan as a home internet replacement. This also marks the first time we've seen the concept of hotspot data used in Australia - it is however quite common in the US.
The second catch is that your unlimited data allowance won't be shared with any other Vodafone mobile plans on your account. Your partner or kids can't access your endless allowance if they run out of data themselves.
You will still get the standard Vodafone bundling perks, however. You'll save 5% on your monthly bill for every postpaid mobile, mobile broadband, or tablet plan on your account after the first, up to a maximum of 20% with five services. You're also eligible to save $15 per month on any Vodafone NBN plan.
While a truly unlimited data plan may seem like a tantalising option, it's worth considering your own data usage requirements before making the plunge - especially given the $85 per month price tag. For comparison, Vodafone's own plans start at $40 per month with 40GB, and you can double that to 80GB for an extra $5 per month. You can get even better deals when looking at MVNOs like Circles.Life where you'll get 100GB for $28 per month for your first six months and $38 per month thereafter.
Alongside introducing the new plan, Vodafone axed its previous top-end plan featuring 500GB of data and capped speeds of 20Mbps after you went over your allowance. Vodafone's remaining "limited" "unlimited" plans have capped speeds of 2Mbps on Lite plans and 10Mbps on Super plans. Here is Vodafone's current SIM-only plan range:
