Tangerine has acquired the customer base of fellow Telstra MVNO numobile, adding 7,000 new subscribers to the business.
Tangerine co-founder and Executive Head Rich Branson told WhistleOut that all numobile customers have already been moved over to Tangerine, without the need for a new SIM. The numobile customers are either on a Tangerine mobile plan that matches their numobile plan, or a Tangerine plan with the same price but more data.
Here are Tangerine's mobile plans:
numobile customers who've been moved from Tangerine do benefit from a few additional features, like companion eSIM for smartwatches (which is a feature numobile was planning on implementing), international roaming, and bundle discounts for those who choose to buy an NBN plan with Tangerine.
Customers who bought a refurbished phone through numobile will still continue to pay off the handset through numobile. numobile is no longer selling devices or mobile services. Tangerine didn't acquire the numobile brand.
While Branson says Tangerine has considered selling phones on a plan, it doesn't intend to do so.
"A lot of the manufacturers now offer zero per cent finance, so sometimes it's easier to go directly to those manufacturers like Apple and Samsung," said Branson.
Branson also says Tangerine is "always on the lookout" for future acquisition targets, pointing to the difficulty smaller providers have with issues like compliance.
"There is a lot of compliance coming through in the industry at the moment, which makes it harder for some of the smaller providers to keep up," said Branson.
"Now there are lots of TCP code requirements around financial hardship abilities, and like that, that we're putting in place right now. So it does mean more and more resources have to go into compliance, and we may see some of the smaller operators not able to sort of keep up with those demands."
"We've got a significant legal team now that is working on compliance regularly, and it requires a lot of system changes. Being able to give customers the ability to break bills down if they're having problems paying, you know, with the cost of living crisis. We offer quite a few options around that."
