Optus MVNO Spintel is transitioning its BYO phone plans away from its current flexible plan builder model to fully Unlimited plan structures. Happily, the plans are getting cheaper as a result.
In the existing plan builder, customers are asked to choose from tiered call, sms and data inclusions. Each step up increase the plan value, and the plan price, in fairly even increments.
The new Unlimited Plans ask customers to choose a data level only: either 500MB, 1GB or 4GB. All plans come with unlimited calls, SMS and MMS, so data becomes the only consideration.
Importantly, the plan combinations are now all cheaper than selecting similar plans in the old builder model. a plan with 500MB data will now cost $22.95 down from $30; 1GB of data per month in a plan costs $24.90 down from $33. And, in what will surely prove to be the most popular combination, a 4GB plan combo will now cost $35.90 — down from $39.90.
If unlimited calls and messages sounds like overkill, SpinTel will also offer a cheaper option with 200 calling minutes and 200 messages for $8 less per month. This reduces the price of the 4GB plan to a low $27.90.
This is an aggressive move by SpinTel and is an impressively swift response to how the BYO market is shifting. The re-entry of Kogan Mobile, the recent TPG plan changes and Amaysim’s new high-value plans mean it's more important now than ever for the telcos to make sure the price of plans is right.
SpinTel has enjoys an advantage over some competitors, like Kogan, by offering full access to the Optus 4G Plus network, and not the Vodafone 3G network. At this price, every perceivable increase in value is all it takes to win potential customers.
