Optus is the latest mobile provider to announce price increases, with its postpaid mobile plans seeing a $5 increase from May 18. The telco is, however, also adding extra data to go with the price increases, meaning its cheapest plan will become a $60 per month plan with 60GB.
Below is how pricing is changing for Optus' postpaid mobile plans, which can be purchased as a SIM-only plan or bundled with a new plan:
| Old Pricing | New Pricing |
|---|---|
| $55 per month for 50GB | $60 per month for 60GB |
| $65 per month for 200GB | $70 per month for 240GB |
| $85 per month for 400GB | $90 per month for 480GB |
Customers on older Optus Choice prepaid plans will also get a $5 increase. The changes impacted both personal and business customers. Prepaid plans aren't going up in price this time around.
Optus says the price increases allow it to continue to invest in its network.
"We are making significant, ongoing investments in our network to improve coverage, speed and resilience, while also strengthening the service and support we provide to customers," said an Optus spokesperson. "Changes to pricing on some plans support this work."
"We’re ensuring we give customers at least 30 days’ notice, clear information, and support options. Customers can contact Optus to discuss their plan or seek assistance, including support for those experiencing financial hardship."
WhistleOut also understands that issues like the component crisis and rising price of fuel factored into Optus' decision to up monthly fees.
Optus' price rise announcement follows similar announcements from Telstra and its budget brand Belong last week. Most Telstra postpaid plans will see a $4 per month price increase, which will make its entry-level plan $74 for 50GB as of May 5. Meanwhile, Belong's SIM-only plans are all getting a $4 per month increase.
While Optus' price increase will still see it undercut Telstra, there are plenty of cheaper options outside of the Big Three providers. Here's a selection of popular plans in the WhistleOut database, grouped by a few different price points.
