Optus customers can today download a new app that will seamlessly switch calling and messaging duties from the Optus cellular network to any nearby WiFi hotspot.
The Optus WiFi Talk app is available for iOS and Android, and is designed to mimic the functions of the standard Dialler and Address Book apps already installed on smartphones. Users can search through all contacts stored on their phones and use the app to either call them or send messages.
When active, the WiFi Talk app will use the WiFI internet connection to override the basic calling and texting functions, so that your phone uses data to communicate, much like internet calling apps such as Skype and WhatsApp.
The benefits in using the WiFi Talk app aren’t in cost-savings, in fact Optus says that standard call and message rates still apply. Rather customers should find the app most useful in places where they have limited cellular reception. Optus identifies indoor locations, like at home or in a shopping centre, are being ideal candidates for when the WiFi Talk app will be most useful.
Perhaps best of all, Optus customers will still use the same mobile phone number. There’ s no new number or goofy username login to share with friends and family.
Optus customers can grab the app now from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
