Overnight OPPO announced two new pieces of flash charging tech, with one claiming to take a flat 4,500mAh battery to 100% in nine minutes.
Dubbed 240W SUPERVOOC, this new tech uses three charge pumps, and a USB-C interface in order to charge devices. The manufacturer has also come out with 150W SUPERVOOC, which, during testing, was shown to charge a 4,500mAh battery fully within 15 minutes.
While fast charging is a god send during a time when Android devices have ubiquitous poor battery life, OPPO’s 150W SUPERVOOC also features a Battery Health Engine aimed at improving battery health alongside the snappy charge time.
The Battery Health Engine (BHE) uses two key technologies:
a Smart Battery Health Algorithm, and
Battery Healing Technology.
The algorithm dynamically adjusts charging currency based on the negative electrodes inside the battery. By switching up the current this way, it helps to minimise dead, or inactive lithium within the battery, in turn giving the battery itself a longer shelf life.
Battery Healing Technology (which immediately conjures images of taking your Pikachu to the Poke Centre), works to optimise battery life from the inner chemistry of the battery. Every time you charge your battery the electrodes become less powerful, but Battery Healing Technology refers to durable film that forms during charge and discharge cycles called Solid Electrolyte Interface. SEI effectively protects the electrode material from damage, and lets them charge more efficiently for longer.
None of these innovations will be available with the Find X5 series which is expected to be released later in the year, but BHE will be integrated into most mid-to-high tier OPPO and OnePlus phones in the future. 150W SUPERVOOC flash charge with BHE will debut on a OnePlus smartphone in the second quarter of this year.
