Nokia G42 in So Purple colourway

HMD Global has just announced its newest self-repairable smartphone — the Nokia G42. The new phone will be available in a violet hue called "So Purple" and will land in Australia in late July 2023. It will retail for $499.

Wait, did you say self-repairable?

Yes but no, that's not quite a thing phones do, yet. What we mean is you can repair the phone at home yourself without needing to book in with a specialist phone repairer. It's part of HMD Globals' effort to make Nokia phones last even longer in your (possibly) clumsy hands. Nokia released its first self-repairable phone, the G22 earlier this year in partnership with iFixit and, unlike the G22, the G42 offers 5G connectivity.

The G42 ships as "QuickFix repairable", meaning you can replace cracked screens, old batteries and charging ports yourself. iFixit will have step-by-step repair kinds and parts available in Australia starting at $42.99 for the charging port, $49.99 for the battery, and $89.99 for the display.

While nothing will ever hold a candle to the Nokia 3310, HMD says the G42 has been rigorously stress-tested to ensure durability as you go about your day.

Nokia G42 specifications

Repairability aside, the Nokia G42 comes with some pretty decent specs, including a three-day battery life. Keeping longevity in mind, it's designed to keep 80% of its battery capacity after 800 charging cycles. That's 60% more than the Nokia G50.

It has a 6.56-inch display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ 5G processor. Locally it will come with 128GB of storage and 6GB of memory. The G42 will ship with Android 13 installed and include two years of OS upgrades and three years of security updates (a little less than we'd like frankly but it does keep the cost of the device lower).

In terms of the camera, it has a 50MP primary camera and the same smart imaging AI featured on the high-end Nokia X30. It also has OZO 3D audio capture to help your videos sound better.

Where can I get the Nokia G42?

The Nokia G42 will be available from Nokia.com and leading retailer partners. We'll update this article with further details upon launch.
