JB Hi-Fi has been slinging Telstra phone plans since September last year, and it's now making a few big changes to how they work.

While you'd previously get a $300 or $500 discount (depending on your handset) when you signed up one of JB's exclusive Telstra plans, the retailer is now also giving you the option to pay off the remaining balance over 24 months as with a more traditional phone contract.

JB is calling these Mobile Repayment Contract plans. These are all based on its $65 per month Telstra plan, which includes 80GB of data, unlimited talk and text, but no international calling.

The total cost of the plan over 24 months is roughly equal to $1,560 plus the outright cost of the handset, less $300 or $500 depending on the phone in question. A $300 discount is applied to phones that cost less than $998 outright, while a $500 discount is applied to phones priced at a minimum of $999 outright. However, in most cases, JB has rounded down a phone's outright price to a neater monthly cost.

At present, JB Hi-Fi is only offering iPhones on its Mobile Repayment Contract plans. Here's a look at what you'll pay for your phone and plan:

  • iPhone 7 32GB: $83.50 per month
  • iPhone 8 64GB: $93 per month
  • iPhone 8 256GB: $95 per month
  • iPhone 8 Plus 64GB: $92 per month
  • iPhone 8 Plus 256GB: $102 per month
  • iPhone X 64GB: $105.50 per month
  • iPhone X 256GB: $116 per month
  • iPhone XR 64GB: $94 per month
  • iPhone XR 128GB: $98 per month
  • iPhone XR 256GB: $105.50 per month
  • iPhone XS 64GB: $112 per month
  • iPhone XS 256GB: $122 per month
  • iPhone XS 512GB: $135 per month
  • iPhone XS Max 64GB: $119 per month
  • iPhone XS Max 256GB: $129.50 per month
  • iPhone XS Max 512GB: $142.50 per month

These plans are exclusively available for customers porting in to Telstra or customers taking up new phone numbers.

To celebrate the launch of its Mobile Repayment Contract plans, JB Hi-Fi has three iPhone deals just for customers porting to Telstra (customers signing up for an entirely new number are not eligible).

  • iPhone XR 256GB: $99 per month
  • iPhone XS 256GB: $119 per month
  • iPhone XS Max 256GB: $123 per month

These three offers are all excellent (especially considering that they come with Telstra coverage), but outside of this trio, it's definitely worth considering other options for your next phone and plan. JB's plans are on the pricier side of the market.

For example, when it comes to the 64GB iPhone XR, JB's offer sits between two Telstra plans in terms of value. $109 per month gets you 50GB on Telstra, $112 gets you 80GB on JB, and $129 gets you 120GB on Telstra. But for comparison, $105 per month gets you 200GB on Optus.

JB Hi-Fi's mobile plans are available in stores only.
