The best phone apps for Seniors

Whether you're on your first or fifth touchscreen smartphone, you'll know one of their big benefits is having access to apps. There's an app for almost anything you can think of, including social media, games, recipes, magazines, online shopping, music, movies, and more.

Short for 'application', an app is a piece of software specially designed to be stored on and used on your mobile phone or tablet. Your phone will feature plenty of pre-installed apps, but you're also able to pick and choose your own programs to add to your device.

Since there are literally millions of mobile apps available for you to download and use, figuring out which ones you'll get the most from might be a little overwhelming - especially if you're new to smartphones. So we've compiled a list of some of our favourite, easy-to-use essential apps for seniors.

How to find apps

You'll need to find and download an app to your phone before you can use it, but where you'll need to go to do this depends on the brand of your phone. You'll also need to be connected to the internet, either through WiFi or your mobile network.

If you're a new iPhone user, apps are available from the App Store. Tap the blue App Store icon on your phone, and it will take you to the Store where you can browse apps by category and popularity, or search for specific apps by name. Once you find an app you like, tap it for more info, reviews, and screenshots, or hit the GET icon to download.

You'll need an Apple ID to download and buy apps on your iPhone. This was probably set up when you first got your phone, but for more help, you can read up on Apple IDs and iCloud here.

If you're not using an iPhone, you're probably the proud owner of an Android device - it's the go-to operating system for brands such as Samsung, Huawei, Google, Nokia, Sony, LG, OPPO, Motorola and more. In this case, you can find apps by opening the Google Play Store on your device.

Once you've found and opened Google Play, you'll need to be signed in with your Google account in order to download apps. If you don't already have this set up, you can create one by opening the Settings app on your phone, then scrolling to Accounts and selecting Add Account. Tap Google, then follow the prompts to enter your personal info.

Like Apple's App Store, the Google Play Store allows you to browse and search for apps by name and subject. Found an app you want to try? Tap the three dots to the side of the app name and select Install, or tap the app name for more information.

What about paid apps and in-app purchases?

While all the apps we've listed in this article are free, you will find some applications require you to pay an upfront charge to download and use them. If you do tap on a paid app, you'll receive a pop-up asking you to sign in or verify your account before making the purchase, so you're unlikely to buy an app by accident.

Other apps are free to download, but feature in-app purchases - the ability to buy added features or extras from within the app. This mostly applies to games, but again, if you are using an app with this feature, you'll be prompted to confirm your purchase via your Apple ID or Google account before buying.

Some free apps may also be ad-supported, so advertising may appear onscreen when using them.

Now with all that said, let's get stuck in.

Communications apps

WhatsApp
WhatsApp

Available on: Google Play, App Store

There are plenty of messaging apps available, but WhatsApp is one of the most consistently popular worldwide. WhatsApp is as simple to use as your phone's text messaging feature, but allows you to send text, pictures, and video using your device's data connection. This makes it an ideal message option for anyone with family and friends overseas, as sending texts and media internationally is absolutely free.

In fact, other than the small amount of data used to send and receive messages, WhatsApp is entirely free to use - so if you don't have international texting included on your mobile plan, it's a cheap and fun option for staying in touch.

Simple Social
Simple Social

Available on: Google Play

Unfortunately, this app is currently only available to Android users. But if that's you, Simple Social is 'app-tly' named: it's one of the easiest ways to simplify and navigate your social media accounts, especially Facebook.

The Simple Social app allows you to view all your social media from one platform. It features a user-friendly, streamlined interface that's great for browsing Facebook, and gives you quick and easy access to Facebook's Messenger from within the same app. You can also use your Simple Social account to access Twitter and Google+, with Instagram integration coming soon.

Basically, if you're keen to get involved with social media, but put off by the complexity of the Facebook app, Simple Social may be worth a try. It's also much less battery-intensive than Facebook's official app, meaning your phone will last longer between charges.

In many ways, Flush is perhaps the most invaluable app here. 100% free to use, Flush is your pocket public toilet finder, listing more than 190,000 restrooms in cities around the world.

The Flush app uses your phone's GPS to pinpoint your location, then directs you to the nearest public loo. You can check beforehand which toilets have disabled access, require a key or code, or are for 'customers only', and the app's restroom database is regularly updated by thousands of users. Flush can also be used without an internet connection, provided your location has been pre-loaded to the app - a real lifesaver in your hour of need.

Accessibility tips

You shouldn't have to adapt to your smartphone. Your smartphone can adapt to you. Whether your eyes and ears need a little extra help or you just want a simpler experience, your smartphone should be able to accommodate.

Improve user friendliness

Best smartphones for seniors - Wiser Launcher

A smartphone can be an overwhelming experience if you're a new user. There are so many apps and notifications to keep track of. Fortunately, you can use an app like Wiser Launcher to make things easier.

Wiser Launcher provides a simpler, easier to navigate home screen and layout, a big dialling pad for easy calling and quick shortcuts to your favourite contacts, apps and settings.

You can install it on a phone with the Android operating system simply by going to the Play Store and searching for Wiser Launcher. Download the app and then click your phone's home button. You should be asked if you want to start using Wiser Launcher. You can choose to use it one time as a trial, or always. Unfortunately, it's not available on the iPhone.

Increase font size

If you're happy with your phone's interface but are having trouble reading that tiny text, you can increase the font size using your phone's Accessibility settings.

On iPhone:

  • Go to Settings – General – Accessibility.
  • Select Larger Text – On.
  • Drag the slider across the screen to choose the font size you prefer.

On Android:

  • Go to Settings – Accessibility.
  • Select Vision – Screen zoom and font.
  • Drag the slider with the title Font size across the screen to choose the font size you prefer.

Hearing aids

Best smartphones for seniors - Hearing aids

If you have a hearing aid, you may be better off choosing an iPhone over an Android device. Many hearing aids are "made for iPhone" and can be paired wirelessly with your iPhone via Bluetooth technology.

Android phones, on the other hand, offer only a hearing aid setting which improves the sound quality of your device for use with hearing aids.

Using a hearing aid with iPhone:

  • Have your hearing aids on hand.
  • Go to Settings – General – Accessibility.
  • Select Hearing Aids.
  • The phone will search for your hearing aids. When it finds them your name will pop up.
  • Select your name – Pair.
  • Repeat for the second hearing aid, if you have two.

Using a hearing aid with Android:

  • Go to Settings – Accessibility.
  • Select Hearing.
  • Select the Hearing aids button to turn the hearing aids feature on.

Other accessibility features

Both iPhone and Android phones offer a range of other accessibility features including high contrast fonts for easy reading, flash lights for notifications and a whole lot more. It's worthwhile exploring these features to see what improvements you can make to your smartphone experience. Just visit the Accessibility menu.

On iPhone:

  • Go to Settings – General – Accessibility.

On Android:

  • Go to Settings – Accessibility.
