gomo is to Optus what Belong is to Telstra - or it’s close enough to it. gomo, a mobile virtual network operator, owned and operated by Optus will give you access to the exact same network as Optus proper. The question however, is how the two practically compare.
While there are bound to be plenty of similarities between parent and child company, genetics aren’t everything. Instead of the range of plans we see with Optus, gomo only has one plan and once you’ve got your SIM card you’ll deal with everything through an app. Read on to see how simplicity compares to choice.

gomo vs Optus: Data inclusions
gomo
gomo has but one plan - $25 per 30 days for 18GB of data plus unlimited talk and text. That is a solid data-to-dollar ratio, and sits relatively on par with other providers within this price point. If 18GB seems a touch steep, you can add on a $5 Data Booster which will get you 5GB to use before the end of your recharge period.
Here are how other Optus MVNOs compare at the $25 level:
Although the plan is technically prepaid, you’ll need to establish a subscription so your plan doesn’t lapse. Essentially this is the same as enabling auto-recharge.
Optus
Unlike gomo, Optus has a range of prepaid and postpaid mobile plans with varying data inclusions. Optus Flex Recharges start from just $1 and 1GB per day, while Epic Data Recharges can yield up to 30GB for $50 excluding any promotional offers. The data-to-dollar ratios are relatively on par for the best value plans but you’ll need to pay more than $25 per month to reap those rewards.
Here are Optus’ 28-day prepaid recharges.
When it comes to postpaid plans however, the cheapest options start at $39 per month for 10GB of data. Jumping up by $10 will get you 60GB per month, but that comes in at just under double the cost of gomo.
It is worth noting that Optus’ postpaid plans are now free from excess data charges. Once you’ve run through your monthly data you can stay connected at speeds of 1.5Mbps at no extra cost. If that doesn’t cut it for you, the provider still offers data top ups at heavily discounted prices.

gomo vs Optus: Coverage
gomo
gomo is powered by the Optus 3G and 4G network. At this stage, gomo customers don't have access to 5G connectivity.
Optus
Of course Optus uses the entirety of it’s network including 3G, 4G and the expanding 5G coverage. Currently this covers 98.5% of the population, making it the second largest network in Australia after Telstra.
gomo vs Optus: Phones
gomo
As a prepaid service, gomo currently does not offer any devices.
Optus
Optus has a wide range of devices to buy outright or on a plan. Available devices include the latest Apple, Samsung and Google products, as well as more affordable OPPO and Nokia phones.
Plans are available over 12, 24 or 36-month repayment plans. The cost of the phone is broken into monthly repayments based on how long you choose to pay it off. A shorter contract means that you’ll own your phone faster, but pay more month to month while a longer plan is the opposite.

gomo vs Optus: Data rollover
gomo
Gomo’s plan includes data rollover of up to 200GB. Any excess data left at the end of the recharge period will automatically go to your data bank. If you happen to burn through your 18GB then you can dip into your data bank and use that instead of opting for an add-on or living without the internet.
Optus
All Optus prepaid options have the same data rollover inclusions as gomo. There is no data bank for postpaid plans, they do however come with unlimited mobile data capped at speeds of 1.5Mbps after you use your monthly allowance.
Data sharing is also available across eligible plans on the same account.
gomo vs Optus: Perks and freebies
gomo
Like most budget plans from MVNOs gomo is barebones and will give you just what you need and not much else. For the price though, you can spend your dollars elsewhere.
Notably however, gomo does offer free calls to emergency help lines such as Lifeline (13 11 44), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636) and Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800), even if you have zero credit.
Optus
Optus postpaid plans worth $49 per month or over (excluding handset repayments) come with a free Optus Sports subscription which gets you access to the widest range of soccer (sorry football) in the country.
Every Optus customer has access to Optus Perks which gets you discounted movie tickets at HOYTS cinemas. Standard tickets cost $12.50 while HOYTS LUX tickets go for just $27.
Optus prepaid customers can also call Lifelife, Beyond Blue, and Kids Help line with zero credit.
