What is the 7 Day Price Match?
If you buy a phone through Telstra and find a better price elsewhere within seven days, the provider will match that price in the form of a credit on your account. Although it seems like a straight forward system, there is a lot of fine print you need to be aware of.
Who is eligible?
Any Telstra postpaid personal or business account holder, whose account number does not begin with ‘5’ can redeem a price match. We know, it’s a weird place to draw the line but accounts that begin with the number five belong to prepaid customers, who are ineligible for this guarantee.
Here are Telstra's eligible postpaid plans:
You also will need to have purchased and received your phone within the last seven days in order to submit a claim.
Below are some of the most popular handsets available with Big T.
Only authorised account holders can apply for a price match, and there is a limit of five claims per customer. So if you are the primary account holder and you have five family members on the same account who you wish to price match products for, you will use up all of your claims at once. We currently are unaware as to how long until these claims reset, or if they do.
Which devices can I price match?
Currently Telstra is only offering a price match on mobile phones purchased through the provider outright, on a plan, using a trade-in or with points plus pay. Prepaid phones, second-hand or refurbished devices and wholesale priced phones are excluded from the guarantee.
Does Telstra match plan fees?
No, the provider will not match a competitor’s plan inclusions or offers on request.
Which stores will Telstra match with?
The provider will price match with any Australian store that has a physical point of presence, which ultimately means that it needs to have a shopfront. Amazon and Kogan are a no go. Offers from online only and international stores will not be honoured, but if an approved shop (like JB HiFi, Big W or Officeworks) has an online only offer Telstra will match it.
Can you price match sale items?
According to the terms and conditions, products with pricing set “significantly lower than the RRP or Market Value” will not be eligible for a price match. However a Telstra representative told WhistleOut that the provider will match against sale items, including discounts from major sales events like Black Friday, Boxing Day etc.
Discounts however need to be on the recommended retail price and can not take the form of a monthly discount on a payment plan. Say that Vodafone or Optus are taking $10 per month off your iPhone 12 repayments, this does lower what you pay for the phone but is not considered a RRP discount and will not be honoured by Big T.
How to claim your price match?
In order to get the price match you’ll need to make sure that you match the below criteria:
Be a Postpaid Telstra customer
Have purchased, or entered into a payment plan, and received your phone within the last seven days
Provide proof of a lower price for your device that complies with all of the following:
- The phone model and storage are identical,
- The discount is on the RRP of the phone,
- The price comes from an Australian store with a physical presence.Submit the Price Match Claim through the Telstra online portal.
You will receive information about whether your claim has been successful within 14 business days.
Do any other telcos price match?
The only other telco that offers a semblance of a price match is Optus, but that is only limited to 5G devices. If you find a better price on your Optus 5G phone then you can get in touch with the provider who will match the upfront retail price.
