Optus today announced that it will now price any local competitor when it comes to 5G smartphones, for any device in its range. If any retailer selling local stock - whether it's another telco or a retailer like JB Hi-Fi or Harvey Norman - Optus will offer the same device price on a plan.
The discount is applied as a monthly credit equal based on the difference between the Optus price and the competing retailer's price divided by the number of months in your plan. If you decided to buy your phone outright from Optus, you'll be charged the discounted price upfront.
To price match, you'll need to visit an Optus store, call Optus, or use live chat on the Optus website.
There are however a few catches. Optus will only price match the advertised total upfront retail price of the phone. Optus won't match a discount if the price is only available when paying the phone over a certain period of time - such as a $10 per month discount. For example, Woolworths Mobile is currently offering $180 per month of any Galaxy S20 FE plan, which would fit into the sort of promotion Optus wouldn’t match.
Optus also won't price match grey market stock sold by retailers like Kogan. That is, international models that are being resold domestically.
If you want to price match a 5G phone with Optus, the discount will be applied over the course of the phone plan with Optus. If you leave before your term is up, you will forfeit the remainder of your discount. For example, if you get a $240 credit on a 24-month plan and leave half-way through, you'll need to pay out the extra $120.
Lastly, the phones sold by Optus must be identical to what is being price match, including specifics like colour. If a retailer is only offering a discount on an orange model and Optus doesn't have orange in its range, you won't be able to save any cash. Refurbs and display stock are also ineligible for price matching.
