Christmas is a time to connect with friends and family, but while we might usually spend this time around the table popping Christmas crackers, this year we might find we spend more time catching up over the phone.

This is especially true for family and friends overseas who can’t return to join us this summer. So what’s the cheapest way to connect with everyone without limits on how long we can stay on the call?

When we crunch the numbers using the hundreds of plans in our database, our pick this Christmas is Gomo; one of the newest telcos in the market. A Gomo subscription costs $25 per month and you get unlimited calls and texts to standard Australian numbers and unlimited standard calls to numbers in a selection of 15 popular overseas destinations, including the US, UK, China, Malaysia and Singapore.

New customers who buy their SIM online before January 10 2021 will get their first month for just $10 ($25 per month thereafter). This covers unlimited standard calls all across Australia and to many of the places that Aussies call most overseas.

If you activate your Gomo subscription before 28 February 2021 and pay for the first 3 months, you then get the next 3 months free. When you include the $10 offer and stack up the total cost over this first 6 months, a Gomo subscription works out to be about half the price of a similar plan from a different provider.

Of course, many of us prefer to see the person we’re speaking to and choose services like Facetime, Zoom or video calling in WhatsApp. Making these calls don’t count as overseas calls, but they do chew through your mobile data.

The amount of data each of these services use varies depending on your connection, as each is pretty good at varying the quality of calls to match your internet speed. But if you have a good 4G connection you’re likely to need about between 150MB to 200MB per hour, or about 1GB for each 5 - 6 hours you spend calling.

Again, Gomo’s subscription cost is great value for video calling this Christmas. You get 18GB of data with a subscription, which is great value at the standard $25 price, but it is exceptional value when you’re only paying $10 for the first month.

All considered, Christmas is a great time to road-test the new Gomo subscription

mobile service. You get stacks of data, unlimited calls to standard numbers in Australia and 15 countries overseas, and it’ll only set you back a tenner for the first month. You can buy your SIM online and then manage your account via the Gomo app.
