If you're looking for a mobile plan for work, there's a chance you've considered Telstra. While many smaller providers don't have a business focused offering, the big three all do. Here's what you need to know about how Telstra's business plans compare to its consumer offering, as well as to Optus and Vodafone.
Telstra Personal vs. Telstra Business
If you're tossing up between a standard Telstra mobile plan and a Telstra business mobile plan, you might be curious to know what the differences are. In actual fact, there are very few.
The most significant difference is that Telstra business plans allow for data sharing. If you have multiple services on the same account, your data allowances will be combined into a single pool that can be used by anyone. Telstra's business mobile plans and business mobile broadband and tablet plans all support data sharing. Data sharing is no longer available on Telstra's standard mobile plans.
In addition, you need an ABN to sign-up to one of Telstra's business mobile plans. This may make it easier to claim a larger proportion of your phone bill on your tax, but this will depend on your circumstances. If you're claiming your phone plan on tax, you should consult an accountant first.
Otherwise, Telstra consumer and Telstra business plans are identical. There's no difference in price, inclusions, or data allowance. You still get access to perks like Telstra Air, free streaming sport, and the Telstra Plus rewards program. You'll still need to pay extra for 5G if you're not one of the telco's top two plans. You can still bundle a new phone with any SIM-only plan, and it will cost exactly the same amount as it would on a personal plan.
Telstra even tends to apply the same promotions to both its personal and business plans. If you can save $10 per month on a regular plan, that discount will almost certainly be mirrored across its business range.

Telstra Business vs. Optus and Vodafone
Optus and Vodafone also have a business focused offering, and as with Telstra, their plans are largely identical to their consumer offering. As such, comparing a Telstra business plan to a Optus or Vodafone business plan is very much as the same as when comparing personal plans from any of these providers.
Unsurprisingly, Telstra is the most expensive option, with plans starting at $50 per month with 30GB. Both Vodafone and Optus offer 60GB at that kind of price point. The two rivals also have a cheaper 10GB plan available for $39 per month on Optus, or $40 per month on Vodafone for those looking for a lower monthly bill.
While Telstra business plans are often the priciest on the Australian market, they come with a host of perks. These include:
- Access to Telstra's super-fast 4GX network
- Data-free access to Apple Music
- Free access to AFL, AFLW, NRL, Netball and Football live apps
- Free access to Telstra Air Wi-Fi hotspots across Australia
- Free access to Fon public Wi-Fi hotspots overseas
- Access to the Telstra Plus perks and rewards program
All Telstra business phone plans are no-contract on the basis that you can leave at any time, you'll just need to pay out the remaining value of your phone, if you've bundled one. You also have the option to step up or down in plan inclusions up to one time per month, which is great if you have variable usage.
Telstra gives you the option to pay off a new device over 24 or 36 months. And all plans come with zero excess data charges. If you go over your cap, your data will simply be slowed to speeds of 1.5Mbps, which is still fast enough to stream video in HD. But speeds may be slower during peak times.
Optus business plans come with big data inclusions and entertainment extras. Most Optus plans include:
- 6-12 month free subscription to Apple Music
- Free access to Optus Sport
- Discounted movie tickets for Hoyts cinemas through the Optus Perks program
All Optus plans are contract-free, new devices can be paid off across 12, 24, or 36 months, and you can customise inclusions like roaming and international calls on a month-to-month basis.
Higher-end Optus plans include unlimited international calls to selected destinations included with the plan, as well as a monthly allocation of roaming data for use overseas.
Vodafone business phone plans don't come with with the kinds of freebies and perks you can get from Optus or Telstra, but you do get $5 per day roaming, which is still one of the best ways to travel overseas with an Australian phone number. When that's a thing again.
As with Telstra and Optus, Vodafone business plans are contract-free on the basis that you can leave at any time without penalty. You'll just need to pay out the remaining value of your handset if you've bought one. You've got the option of paying off your phone over 12, 24, or 36 months.
