OPPO Australia and The Reef Restoration Foundation have partnered to create an app that lets you explore the Great Barrier Reef from dry land, and for a limited time OPPO will donate $1 to reef restoration for every download.
Recolour the Reef is an augmented reality mobile app that shows a digital render of the coral networks that make up Australia's heritage listed reef. Using your phone's camera, the app overlays digital artworks of the Great Barrier Reef which were created with the help of images and video captured on the manufacturer's latest flagship the OPPO Find X3 Pro.
Users can explore these scenes and toggle the stressors at the bottom of the screen to see the cumulative effects pollution, global warming and other threats have on the ecosystem below the depths.
As the threat level rises the reef colours degrade, and even more hauntingly the fish fade into ghosts of themselves, and I am just so sorry my poor fish friends.
Through the months on March and April, OPPO has pledged to donate $1 per app download to the Reef Restoration Foundation to go towards the regeneration and preservation of the Reef. The app is available to download for free from the App Store and Google Play.
“The partnership with OPPO Australia is a very exciting and important collaboration. The AR app is an education and awareness tool. People only want to protect the things they know about,” said Reef Restoration Foundation CEO Ryan Donnelly, .
“We are trying to generate hope and there’s a realistic optimism around the Great Barrier Reef if people are prepared to act,” added Donnelly.
The Recolour The Reef app is the start of a long-term corporate partnership, with OPPO looking forward to further supporting the Reef Restoration Foundation in their mission to produce 1,000,000 new corals on the Great Barrier Reef by 2026.
