Are you an Aussie heading to Canada? If so, I'm jealous - please have some poutine for me. Just be aware that if you're hoping to take your phone overseas, it's not always cheap to stay connected with the folks back home.
In this guide, we'll look at your options for staying connected when in Canada. Whether you want to use international roaming with your own Australian mobile plan while abroad, get a travel eSIM, or pick up a local SIM on arrival, these are our picks for your best options.
Before we start, here are the most popular roaming-compatible plans from each postpaid telco featured in this guide:
And here are the most popular roaming-compatible plans from each prepaid telco featured in this guide with a minimum 28-day expiry:
Buying a Canadian eSIM card
If you have a phone with eSIM support, travel eSIMs are great value when it comes to staying connected overseas. You can download a SIM card to your phone before you leave the country, and have connectivity when you land.
Travel eSIMs are effectively prepaid as you pay upfront, and they don't renew automatically so there's no risk of being hit with extra charges if you go over your data allowance. If the latter happens, your service will just stop working. In general though, you'll be more in control of your spending.
Airalo is one of our favourite eSIM providers that we've tested in our travels. Plans start at $10.50 for 1GB of data with a three-day expiry. While Airalo's cheapest plans are data-only, it also has options with talk and text. This provider also offers travel eSIMs for usage across North America, which include coverage in Canada. This can be a handy option if you're looking to cross over into the United States during your travels.
Jetpac is another eSIM provider worth considering. If you run out of data on a Jetpac eSIM, you can still use WhatsApp, Uber, Grab, and Google Maps. Jetpac Canada travel eSIMs have a unique perk where you can score for free airport lounge access if your flight is delayed. This is done by registering your flight in the Jetpac app and can be nice to have in emergencies. However, it's important to note that this provider's travel eSIMs don't come with any text or calls.
Last but not least, there's Saily. If you're after an eSIM travel plan that also lets you make phone calls, it might be a good option. This provider offers the ability to add a phone number for an extra USD$1 per month, which is relatively competitive when you compare it against the premium that comes attached to Airalo's eSIM plans that includes calls and texts. Here's a look at travel eSIMs for Canada from some of our favourite providers with at least 5GB and a seven-day expiry:
| Provider | Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | $22 for 3GB with a seven-day expiry | View on Airalo |
| Jetpac | USD$14.50 for 5GB with a seven-day expiry | View on Jetpac |
| Saily | USD$17.99 for 5GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Saily |
For a longer trip, here's a look at plans with at least 10GB and a 14-day expiry minimum:
| Provider | Plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | $29.50 for 10GB with a 14-day expiry | View on Airalo |
| Jetpac | USD$35 for 10GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Jetpac |
| Saily | USD$30.99 for 10GB with a 30-day expiry | View on Saily |
These are much better value than the local SIMs offered by Canadian telcos. Just note that some Canadian travel eSIMs are data-only. As such, you won't be able to make phone calls or receive text messages using them.
Getting a Canadian SIM card
If you're staying in Canada for more than a week, you may want to consider picking up a local SIM card when you arrive. Even Vodafone's $5 per day roaming starts to add up when you're overseas for more than seven days.
The good news is that your Australian mobile phone will almost certainly be compatible with the networks used in Canada, but you'll need to check it's unlocked before you put in a new SIM. You should be able to pick up a local SIM at airports or convenience stores once you touch down.
The bad news is that the Canadian mobile plan market is bleak compared to Australia's when it comes to the amount of dollars you're paying for however much data you need. For a sense of what the landscape looks like when it comes to local Canadian SIM cards, here are a couple of the options.
Koodo Mobile
Koodo is a relatively good a good pick for travellers visiting Canada. Plans start at CAD$19 for 500MB of data, 30-day expiry, unlimited calls and texts within Canada and unlimited texts to selected international destinations.
One key difference that Australians looking to pick up a Koodo Mobile prepaid plan might want to note is that this provider will throw in additional data if you enable automatic top-up. This is something to keep in mind if you're looking to compare it to either a travel eSIM or another local provider.
Here are Koodo Mobile's prepaid plans:
| Price | Data | Talk | Texts | Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAD$19 | 500MB | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and selected destinations | 30 days |
| CAD$21 | 500MB + 500MB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and selected destinations | 30 days |
| CAD$25 | 4GB + 1GB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and selected destinations | 30 days |
| GBP£30 | 10GB + 5GB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and selected destinations | 30 days |
| CAD$35 | 25GB + 5GB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and selected destinations | 30 days |

Koodo SIM-only plans are contract-free, and they can be found at either a Canadian retailers. Alternatively, you can buy a Koodo Mobile eSIM through its website and download it straight to your phone.
Chatr Mobile
Rogers - one of Canada's largest telcos - stopped selling prepaid plans a few years ago, but now has an MVNO called Chatr.
Plans offered by this provider are another option that travellers might want to consider, though they aren't all that different to what you can get from Koodo. As with its rival, Chatr Mobile's prepaid plans come with additional data if you enable automatic top-up.
Here are Chatr Mobile's prepaid plans:
| Price | Data | Talk | Texts | Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAD$21 | 500MB + 500MB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and the US | 30 days |
| CAD$25 | 4GB + 1GB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and the US | 30 days |
| GBP£30 | 10GB + 5GB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and the US | 30 days |
| CAD$35 | 25GB + 5GB w/ automatic top-up | Unlimited to Canada | Unlimited to Canada and the US | 30 days |
Chatr SIM-only plans are contract-free, and should be easy to find when you land. If you want to go paperless, you also can buy a Chatr eSIM through its website and download it straight to your phone.

Telstra customers have different options depending on what plan they're on, which boil down to a Day Pass or PAYG roaming.
Customers with a postpaid Upfront plan have access to Telstra's International Roaming Day Pass. Use your phone for calls, text or mobile data in one of the selected countries and the pass automatically triggers and the charge is added to your bill. The Day Pass lasts for 24 hours, after which you won't be charged until you use your phone again for talk, text or (in Zone 1 or 2 countries) mobile data. Rinse and repeat.
Canada is in Telstra's Zone 2 group, which covers over 80 destinations. You'll pay $10 per 24-hour period for 2GB of data and unlimited standard calls and text.
If you go over your data allowance within a 24-hour period, you pay $10 extra, and Telstra adds 2GB of data to a sort of overage 'bank' on your behalf. This additional data has a 31-day expiry and you dip into it whenever you go over another 24-hour allowance. But it's strictly to cover your overage use — you'll still pay for the Day Pass again when the time comes.
You'll be notified when you've used 50%, 85% and 100% of your Day Pass' inclusions.

FAQ
Can I use my Australian phone in Canada?
Most Australian phones should work in Canada without any problem.
Can you buy a Canadian SIM in Australia?
If you're looking to buy a Canadian SIM in Australia, there are websites like SIM Corner that will ship you a SIM to your Australian address, so you don't waste time searching when you arrive. Just be sure to double-check what these SIMs include, as they often differ from the SIMs you can buy in Canada itself.
Can I use a Canadian SIM in the United States?
Some US phone plans include free roaming for Mexico and Canada, but not all of them. If this is an important feature for you, be sure to double-check when you buy your SIM card.
Is it cheaper to get a SIM card in Canada?
It depends. Although grabbing a local SIM once you arrive at your destination can yield savings in other regions, grabbing a prepaid SIM once you've arrived in Canada can end up costing you a whole lot more than what your Australian telco charges for roaming.
