Telstra is now offering broadband customers a new kind of modem with an integrated 4G backup. Dubbed the Telstra Gateway Frontier, the modem router will automatically rollover to the Telstra 4G network in the event of maintenance, an outage, or simply when you're waiting for your fixed line internet to be connected.
4G speeds are limited to 6Mbps down and 1Mbps per up, which isn't great, but the option is more so meant as a stop-gap for when setting up a new connection, moving house, or if there's an issue with fixed line connectivity. And as we say, slow internet is better than no internet.
"We know home internet is central to how our customers access entertainment, organise their lives and connect to the world," said Telstra Executive Director of Home and Business Products, Stuart Bird. "Many customers have told us being without a home broadband service for even one hour is disruptive so we are introducing a solution that enables them to stay connected to the things they love to do online within minutes of plugging their home gateway in."
In terms of tech specs, Telstra says the Frontier is able to connect 20 devices simultaneously. The modem is powered by a Wi-Fi 802.11ac chip with 4x4 MIMO.
The Frontier modem will set you back $216 outright, or $9 per month on top of a new 24 month broadband bundle (ADSL, Cable, and NBN). Telstra is selling the Frontier modem from today.
