Starlink has introduced a $15 per month fee to rent the hardware you need for use with its Residential plans, effectively increasing all of its prices.
At the time of writing, the $15 per month currently applies to new customers. It may come to affect existing customers in time — it's important to note that the rental option has always been marketed as a $0 rental fee.
Valued at $549, the Standard Starlink Kit has everything customers need to get connected to SpaceX's low-earth orbit satellites, including a Standard 4 dish and a Starlink Mini Router.
Starlink has only been offering the kits as a $0 rental since November last year. Following plan price rises last month, this effectively brings the real prices of Residential plans up to $90 (Residential 100Mbps), $125 (Residential 200Mbps), and $165 (Residential Max) per month.
It was the first time Starlink had increased plan prices since it launched in Australia. Starlink's pricing now looks radically different than a few weeks ago, where a four-month introductory deal saw prices as low as $49 for the entry Residential plan.
Here's a look at Starlink's Residential plans:
The only way around the $15 per month rental fee is purchasing a Starlink Kit outright and then adding a plan for use. At $15 per month, if you're planning to use the Starlink Kit for a minimum of 36-and-a-half months, you'd be better off purchasing the kit outright.
